haha when he was in Toronto, telling us about his nature camp, he said "And every year, I give away a Fodera bass at my nature camp, and this girl won one!" She was in the audience.

So, I yelled "Can I have one?!" And he looks over at me, laughs, and says "if you come to the nature camp!"


haha he seems like a very nice guy.

Most people won't like Vic's music, not because they can't "appreciate" it, or that they can't "understand" it, but because frankly, it's f'king boring in actual fact. In the beginning, a guy looking for inspiration might look at somebody like him and think OMFG THIS DUDE IS GOD, but later, when the wow factor of listening to technically bedazzling stuff wares off, it begins to sound empty.

It doesn't being to sound empty. You just saw the man and his skills disgusted you from bass playing. You got slapped in the face, as we all did, by a monster player with amazing chops, and YES I've known him longer than a week. It's ok, you'll get over it too :)

Youre kidding right? You also make ALOT of generalizations. You need to just speak for yourself. I know more than a handful of ppl THAT ARENT EVEN MUSICIANS that have asked me about his music or expressed love towards it. And if I could pull off his "Overjoyed" off Show of Hands CD, I'd DEF play that for my lady. His solos on the Drummers Collective DVD were hot! I dont think its just your bedroom fanboys, but alot of professionals on here as well who know its more to him that one youre saying. Nevertheless, you feel what you feel, but speak for yourself.

It's typical of a pro elite session player. Master chops doesn't mean you can write popular music that majority like. That assumption is a silly one imo.

Of course there is exceptions but you can bet most other musicians who need a great bass player know who to call.

I love love love Victor when he's playing with Bela Fleck, but I don't care for his solo material at all. Too many songs about playing bass. There are some people who are great writers and some who are not. Bela is. Vic...eh...he has a couple moments here and there, but not like Bela. Bela's a genius.

Indeed! My girlfriends current favorite song is The Vision. Kylie Speaks is also an amazingly creative and cool song. If you want to hear the poure genius of Victor Wooten, listen to his solo on Big Country off of Bela Fleck's Live Art or Live at the Quick CD. Victor Wooten is a musician's musician. Anyone who doesn't dig not only what he does but what he represents in music . . . is completely lost in what music is for. I am not going to argue that Victor Wooten or any musician is the best, but what he does he loves, he feels and I think a TON of other people have smelled what he is stepping in for a very long time. I think it is a bit sad that people would disrespect a man like Victor Wooten . . . I mean, what point are you trying to make? Victor Wooten is not selling out music or musicians, he is not part of a boyband or "playing above his level" (whatever that is meant to imply) . . . he is a musician that helps others learn and writes music that he enjoys sharing. I would also like to point out that if someone started up a Thread talking about Kip Winger's lack of natural bass talent and creativity, I am quite sure no one would bother to reply. 11 pages later, here we are still talking about Victor. Good bassist or not, he is a beautiful and touching musician (You'd have to be to play with the talent of Bela Fleck for so long).

Ha, Jaquo. I'm sure you get my point of that post that Victor Wooten is a good player and musician and you guys need to respect him.

You should never talk down on any musician really unless they are just making music for money. That being said, music is about creative expression and Wooten expresses himself quite well. No need to bust a guy who is having fun just because you dont like the message he is expressing.
