One Sat. night (late), I watched a Dave Koz concert on a local station. The bass player was nicked-named "rubber thumb" or something and I gotta sayed it was disturbing. As Dave was cruising the stage and working his sax like a big brass substitute for his manhood, rubber-thumb was slappin' like there was no tomorrow. It sucked but I couldn't tear myself away; it was like picking a scab. What's that guys name? I kept hoping he would take his bass off and beat Dave with it. Unfortunately, I don't think that's allowed in the world of the sugary-smooth-sounds-of-love.:mad: :p

(McEnroe) You cannot be serious! I don't think some of the younger players realize how much of an effing comet Jaco was. I caught the very tail end of that comet...and that was the worst part! His dedication to the bass guitar was inhuman. It was his LIFE. As a result, he was technically amazing. But there were plenty of technically amazing players then, now, and will be in the future. What Jaco had was a musicality that can't be taught, it comes from personality, life lessons, and the ability to convey emotions through your instrument...and on that level, he was incomparable.

No offense to anyone. I just think that the Flecktones are kinda "lite". Jaco had that sound of himself. What I mean is that it never sounded as if he was playing for anyone else. I also wrote my last post at 4:15am and had just poured my first pot of coffee!:confused:
I saw the Flecktones here in Denton a couple of years ago and while Vic had amazing chops, he just didn't move me. Not the way it did when I first heard "Teen Town"!:D

i dunno too much about who Victor Wooten was influenced by or anything, but in my opinoin i think Jaco was/is better. I dunno just something to think about, but if it werent for Jaco do u think Victor would be as good as he is today cause we all know Jaco did a lot for bass, or do u think if Jaco was never born or something, do u think todayVictor would be seen as someone like Jaco who just did so much for bass, even though the two are kind spread out, and there are/were a lot of great bass players in between there. I Dunno, i like them both, but just tryin to make u guys think. (And start some quality debates:) )

anyone listen to jaco's solo albums lately? I couldn't sit through a whole vic c.d. because it's not great music. But jaco is more than just the greatest bass player he we a great composer and all around player. He did more by the time he 24 than any players I can think of ! By the way I love victor he perfect for Bela but you just could'nt stick him anywhere and have blend in like the god that jaco is. Can you listen to anyone pick up a fretless and not think of the guy! Maybe I'm nuts but Jaco is one of the reasons I even picked up the bass in the first place. Victor sure makes me want to practice!!!!:D

Knowing what type of guy Victah is, that being a really down to earth guy, he would not even allow himself to be compared to Jaco, who is one of his main heroes. I've heard him quote Jaco in most of the times I've seen him (four times).

In my opinion, i really dont think they are compairable in anyway. Jaco was totally all jazz, and vic is all tech. and stuff. IN the jaco book i read, he talked about how he thinks that slapping is bull, and if you listen to vic stuff, hes always slapping. So really, you can't compair the guys. They are different in tons of ways. Not to mention, Jaco isent around, so you cant compair skill becuase jacos dead and vic could even get better or worse, we dont know. Would there be a vic without jaco, probably, but we really dont know. Lets just say both are amazing bass players!!~!! there we go

But it's about quality not quantity. Not many of the post here are worth reading and as most people have said - it is impossible to choose and why should we - it is a meaningless and pointless task.

Why not like hundreds of bassplayers and take what you like from all their playing/writing - it's not the case that you have to have one or the other - anybody can buy all of the CDs that both played on - nothing to stop you!! ;)

Anyway - the point is that why should I care whether 50 people say Victor or Jaco? These sorts of things are a waste of time - no matter how many people reply - whether they get two or 200 replies!

I was just replying to the point raised which I quoted - I haven't read most of it and just scanned a few posts.

I think the point still stands though that there is no reason to choose between two bassists and somehow turn music into a competitive sport like wrestling.

I like hundreds of bassists for varying reasons - I have thousands of CDs that I like - there is no need to only listen to one.
