I understand what your saying but I just have to bring up the fact that 99.9% of people, if they had the skills of Victor, would play WAY more than he does himself. Plus I've heard him say on a number of occasions that he is constantly trying to learn to play less.
Oh yeah, if i must choose I choose Jaco. Even though i think its enough to say that they were/are both ammazing bass players in their own right.

well I see Vic as more of a harlem globetrotters where Jaco was more like the lakers or mid nineties bulls. But I've seen vic three times and I can't sit through a whole show. Too much showing off not enough solid music. Granted I never had the chance to see jaco, and granted no one could sit through his shows either when he was off his rocker. But Vic can do something about it he doesn't have that "I'm crazy" excuse to lie back on.


Now if you put Oteil burbridge or james jamerson up there......

(i.e. Giant Steps). Everyone know's that Scott Henderson's solo had a longer/better solo...why?...because he's just better at his instrument. Jaco's phrasing was/is sometimes just way ahead of Victor's in my opinion. Jaco's done more styles of music than Victor has, or probably ever will. Versatility is everthing.

I think it's kinda like comparing Vinnie Colaiuta to Virgil Donati. Virgil is better as far as technicality is concerned, but Vinnie's just a million miles ahead of Virgil as far as musicianship (and hands) is concerned.

I actually liked Victor Wootens "Live in America" CD. True, Some of the songs were kinda dumb and simple but he was trying to make a catchy funk show not a Virtuoso showing like with Bela Fleck and The Flecktones. And I don't know about that whole Jaco has done more styles of music than Wooten. Ive heard him play Latin,Classical,Raggae,Funk,Rock,Jazz,Improv, and many others. All Ive ever heard Jaco play was Jazz & funk.

P.S- A better poll for the future is who do you prefer more? Victor Wooten vs. Micheal Manring

well ICO he did a terrible friggin job. he barely got 2 minutes into the first song without breakin into 32nd note triplets. His band doesn't even sound that tight. and I've seen the wooten's and I've heard them sound much MUCH tighter. The only parts that shine to me is his stuff with Marcu (a real bass player) and his sly covers (gotta admit I'm pretty impressed when people play "no time") But to pay that much money for 2 songs is nonsense. Catchy funk my rear end it's a masterbatory documentation

Yeah, I actually like Jamerson's tone. Jaco is too honky, and Victor is too clean. But that's my taste. They are all amazing though. They are great groovin' machines.

I think one of the reasons I like Jamerson more is because the songs he played on were all really really good. Jaco's and Victor's just don't capture me.

This type of thread has very little to offer, since to say one particular player is the best is purly opinionated. This question has also been asked several times in the past. So you can add to one of those threads if you wish.

Read the FAQ at the top of the forum, it has a link to a mega Jaco thread and you will learn much about him from it. Also to find out more about who Victor is please do a search and you will find almost every if not every answer about him there.
