Vintage Amp Porn

I guess vintage now. My (purchased new in 1982) Vox V125 Bass on the right. I also have the sister V125 Lead on the left.

How do those sound, in comparison with any JMI product(if you’ve had any experience)? I guess those were the last hurrah of the run of the original company, even though there had been a number of subsequent owners and the brand had suffered. Somewhat rare, I played through a guitar head once a long time ago, I remember the extensive EQ section but not much else.

For the lead the signal is super clean and brilliant. I guess much like typical Vox but much louder. The EQ allows a great deal of flexibility. Both of these have a preamp Gain as well as preamp Volume with another Volume for the output. The Bass has been in my opinion full and rich and I can dial in my sound with any bass plugged in. There has been no other Vox bass amp that compares to it. The Bass really shines with volumes above 60%.

I love that big Red Plush amp. Is that the one you have? What I’m most curious about is the cabinet. I read the fine print On the ad and saw that they claimed it was a modified Klipschorn speaker cab. That really piqued my interest, and I wanted to know how it sounded.

That's not a picture of my Plush stack which is the basic 3x15" in a tasteful black Naugahyde. I would have loved the rolled/ported Klipsch type enclosure.

I had a Kustom just like that. Ended up trading the head for a Hiwatt Custom 100 ( true story), and the bottom sold so I could buy a Hiwatt 4-12 (from the guitarist the played with Wild Cherry) to go with the head.

So basically, I traded my Kustom gear + $60 to have the Hiwatt head re-tubed, and bias set, + $50 differential between what I sold the Kustom cab and the purchase price of them Hiwatt cab.

For what it was in it’s day, Kustom was a solid alternative to really expensive tube rigs.

Outstanding amps. I had a Custom 100 as well back in the 70s. It’s the only piece of gear I regret selling.

I had a Ric 4001 back then and did the ric-o-sound thing Hiwatt ( 412 cab) for the bridge pick up, SVT for the neck in a power trio. It was a glorious sound. When I left that band, all of that gear was sold off. I should have kept the head
