Vintage Hagstroms

This is my first Hagström, bought it over the internet and it´s coming by post today. Have actually not tried it, but will come back with a short review. The prices in Sweden seems much higher than in the USA. I paid 5000 swedish kronor = almost 800 dollars with the current dollarcourse.

Hi again, any idea how the four switches by the volume knob works? Not so much happening when i try them in different positions. The second switch thats a little bit higher simply turns the sound off when i switch it down? is this right?

If you have a switch by itself near the neck it's a stand-by...off/on for the whole thing.

There are four switches by the volume knob, starting furthest from the knob (closest to the neck) they are 1) "L" for low is off/on for the neck pickup, 2) "H" for high is off/on for the bridge pickup, 3) "Tone" is a on/off switch for a .047 uF cap, 4) "Mute" is on/off for a resistor.

I think I posted the schematic in the Pickups forum. Try searching that forum with "Hagstrom" in the title if you're interested.

I have no letters "L", "H" and tone or mute next to the switches, maybe worn off? Not sure if they work properly. Will take the bass to an expert for a little check up. Thanks a lot for the help.

Serial number is 711806.

Can you tell me about it?

Your bass is a Hagstrom IIB, made in production run number 711. That run produced a total of 932 basses with your bass being the 806th one made.

Production run 711 started in 1967 and concluded in 1969. Seeing that your bass is one of the later basses made in the run, it would safe to assume that it was made in late 68 or in 1969.

The first bass I ever bought was a red Hagstrom IIB, which I got used for $90 in 1971. It was a perfect transition from playing the guitar-- skinny neck, short scale. I "moved up" to a new Rick 4001 in 1973 (which I still own). The Hag is definitely in its own league & a lot of fun to play. Wish I still had it.

:cool: Hello Thornton and other Hagstrom guys. I have what I think is a Viking II. It's pretty much identical to the black one you have in your cool collection Thornton. The difference being mine is in honeyburst. Serial #718284, which, if I understand what you said earlier, would be a '67, #284 of run #718. I've had it about 7 years and like it bunches. When I got it, I was told that the case with it is the original. It is hard shell, contoured made by Ess & Ess Quality Cases in Brooklyn New York. It appears, as far as fit, age, body & string indentions in the plush lining (which is sorta goldish orange in color) that, whether original or not, this sweet thumper has been in it a long, long time. Anyway, bass looks original except for the tail piece. Any ideas on the case, where I might find a correct tail piece, and if my serial # thoughts are correct? Thanks and keep thumpin' your HAGS!!! Bigobassman.

Oren, your bass is a called a Concord DeLuxe. Some people call them a Viking-II (but that's a Hag guitar). Run 718 did take place in 1967 through to 68. Concord DeLuxes were availabe in 3 finishes, Black, Cherry Red and Brownburst.

As for your case, it's original. You've described the case that my Concord Deluxe came in.

Thorton, thanks for the clarifications, confirmations and information. Not that it doesn't work properly or is a problem, but, as I mentioned, the tail piece on mine is not an original piece. It looks different than yours and is chrome rather than gold like the rest of the hardware. One of those things that's not a big deal, but I wouldn't mind getting it like it should be one day with a correct piece. So, any ideas or leads on where one might be located? Many thanks for sharing your knowledge with me along with the other deep-end folks on this site. Additionally, I see where you are a "founding father" and I would like to thank you for help putting TB together. I'm just sorry that I've only recently discovered it, but I'll be trying to make up for lost time. Oren

Sure no problem, your bass is catorgized as being a Hagstrom DeLuxe (Hagstrom 1B) made in 1965. They made 500 of them in production run 625. Your bass was the 475th one made in the run.

640065 is a Kent 1B made between 65-66. Run 640 produced 1300 of them. Yours is the 65th one made so i'd feel quite confident in saying that is was made in 1965.

679534 is a Hagstrom II B, made between 66-67. Run 679 produced a total of 1003 of them. Yours was the 534th one made in that run so it could have been made in either 66 or 67.
