Vintage Hagstroms

Your bass was the 87th HIIB-N made in production run number 790. That run produced a total of 400 HIIB-N's.

The run started in 1970 and finished in 1971. Seeing that your bass was the 87th one made, it would be safe to assume that it was made in 1970.

I just picked up a white H-II B and the serial # is 678182. I believe it to be a 67, but any info would be great. So far I really like the way this bass sounds and plays. Though it does feel tiny compared to a p bass, it doesn't sound it.

Your H-II-B was built in production run number 678. That run produced a total of 1098 H-II-B's. Yours was the 182nd one made in that run.

Production run 678 ran in 1966. Not 1967 as you guessed.

You are correct in that the H-1-B (single pickup) basses were made for Hagstrom's Canadian distributor Arc Sound in Toronto. The factory made a total 652 of them in various finishes between 1971 and 1973.

Your particular bass was made in 1972 in production run number 836. That particular run produced 102 of them, and yours was the 68th one made in that run.

I personally have owned 4 H-1-B's over the years. They're fun, cool basses to play. Arc Sound had Hagstrom make them to address the entry or student level bass market place.

Awesome, thanks for the timely reply :) I was told that it was a late 60's model, but it sounds and plays great so I'm a happy camper.

Since you're new to Hagstrom's, make sure that the strings are correctly installed on the headstock. They wrap to the left of the post (not the right as most basses). The E and G strings go to the outside of the string hold down bar while the A and D strings go through the center portion of the same bar.

+1 If you do it right every string will be perfectly straight. If the string has a bend, it is wrong.

man, this thread reminds me that I need to dig my Hagstrom Swede bass out. It was my first bass purchased as NOS around 1980-81.

The shop we got it from had 3 gotten of them in and had then priced at $849 each. IIRC they had a black one, a blond one and a mahogony colored one. They never drew much interest until one week when we went in to buy me a bass, we saw that they had marked them down to $349 and the only one left was the mahogony one. We got it and it even came with the matching hard shell case.

And "Hello" from the frozen Midwest!

I've got an HIIB, my understanding is that it was manufactured in later '65 or early '66. I believe that information came from someone via [email protected], but I can't find the email right now.

The serial number is 654739. I guess that means it was the 739th bass made in production run 654? Is that right, or do you have any other information??

I really love the bass.

654739 is a HII-B made between 1965/66 with a total of 998 made in run 654. And you are correct, it was the 739th one made in the run, most likely in 1966 toward the end of the run.
