Vintage Hagstroms

SN # 701048 was made in 1967. It was the 48th Hagstrom II-B made in production run # 701. That particular run produced 998 of them.

Wow, Thornton! You are a font of knowledge. I have an H II BN serial number 53 936481, which I'm guessing was made around '75. Can you verify the date of manufacture for me?
This was my first bass, I got it in 1987. A friend of mine simply gave it to me. Soon after I got it, in an attempt to make it sound brighter I replaced the bridge pickup with an EMG.
What a mistake. I lost the original pickup but recently found a replacement for it (if you are looking for Hagstrom parts, Janne at Invalid Link Removed is great). Now its back to its original, thumpy glory!

Good guess Bevo1995, it was made in 1975 in production run # 936. It was one of the last (481st) H II B-N's made in that run which produced 500 of them.
FYI run 936, this was the 2nd last production run of H II B N basses. One more run in 1976 of 250 was the very last run. No more were made after that. The focus of the company then shifted to newer modern designs in order to compete against much stiffer competition from other manufacturers.
Within the next 5 years all manufacturing at the Hagstrom factory had ceased and that portion of the company closed forever.

Anybody who has one of these Jazz Basses are lucky , i had this one for years , it plays and sounds sweet , plenty of mwah and light weight.
I have a Scanbass which is the samething as the Jazzbass. Fender forced Hagstrom to change the name of it.
It's like playing a Precision neck/body with Jazz electronics.
Unfortunately Hagstrom didn't make very many of them (745 total)

I like the Scan bass also , wish i had the blond jazz or the fretted model.
I have the same fretless Scanbass, apparently made in 1978.

When I had it, both pickups were dead, I've rewound them and changed scratchy crappy pots too. Now it plays just fine.

Finally was able to get far enough back in the storeroom to get my Hagstrom Swede out. Checked it out, made sure everything was in order and took it to the gig Sat night. What fun. I have not played this bass live in almost 25 years and I have owned it 30 years. Anyway, not pics fromt he show since our photographer (my wife!) didn't make it out.

Your Swede was made in 1976.
It was the 90th Swede made in production run 934. That particular run produced 300 of them.

It's Viking 1N from 1972. Made in production run 828. That particular run produced 200 of them. Your's was the 112th one made in that run.

Im a proud owner of the "fastest playing neck in the world" book. I was looking up a Swede bass with the first numbers 53 914. It says that this model is called "Swede B". None of the other Swede basses or electrical guitars has the "B".
Anyone know what this "B" stands for in this Swede model?

I'd guess the "B" stands for bass.
They also made basses called HIB, HIIB and HIIBN (I think I read the N was for New, as in new model).
I thougth about that too, but why put "B" after Swede in just that bass model? It was made in 74, so the swede bass wasnt that new or anything...One thing could be that they wanted to "separate" the Swede e-guitar from the swede bass, but none of the other swede basses has "b" after swede?
Hello... I just discovered this thread. Boy does it bring back memories! My first bass was a sunburst Hagstrom F-400. I haven't seen one mentioned here yet. Wish I had a picture. Purchased it new in 1965 or 1966. Can't believe I don't remember the exact date 
What I really wanted and had a big jones for was a Coronado IV, but that was out of reach. I had the F-400 until the Fender bug bit me in 1971. Wish I still had it.

I'm absolutely positive the B-15 is from 1964. And since the original owner bought both together new, the Hagstrom is probably from '63 or '64 as well. I got this kit for my birthday in 1967! Cost my folks $150!!
Got an offer for both which I just couldn't refuse. Wish I could have kept every piece of gear that has come and gone... Oh well. At least I had it at the crucial "beginning." Its good to start with good stuff, though the Hag was looked down upon from "Fender Bassists" of the day...
