Al, The F-400 is a Hagstrom II-B.

Hagstrom's American importer renamed the Swedish models for marketing purposes. But the factory continued to place their name and model on the headstock.

Thanks Thorton! I always thought they were the same except for the cosmetics.

And to Tifftunes, I also paired mine with approximately the same vintage B-15. Wish I still had that, too!

It's Viking 1N from 1972. Made in production run 828. That particular run produced 200 of them. Your's was the 112th one made in that run.

I got my hands on a Hagstrom, but know nothing about it. Could anyone tell me what the date is for the serial number 869004? Got it from my church, they pulled all the stuff from the music room and it was stuck in the back. Hope someone can tell me something about it!

Your Hagstrom is a Swede guitar made in 1973.

What are the indicates to see if a Hagstrom is refinished? I mean, the "Made in sweden" sticker could have been removed anyways, and ive seen that it wears off pretty often, and if the white dots at the potentiometers are still there, i guess that some insurance. The original finish on hagstroms are really amazing, but i dont know if its possible to see the difference between a really really good refinish job and the original finish?

I had another question about it, though:
The back of the neck is yellow, quite different from the body. Does this mean I have a replacemnt neck, or is this typical?

It's very typical for these basses. My '65 was the same before I refinished the neck out of necessity.

Thanks for the info, Chuck. Nice to know. That flickr link is all the "before" photos, as in before I cleaned it up. I should update it with "after", it looks much better now.

In a nutshell no.

But I'll tell you how the Hagstrom serial numbering system works. The first 3 represent the production run number. the last 3-4 digits is the sequence in numerical order of where the instrument was made in the production run.

For example, 701464 = production run #701
Instrument is the 464th one made in that run.

If you happen to have a copy of The Hagstrom Blue Book, then you can look up production run #701 and see that it was a run of Hagstrom II-B basses with a total of 998 being made in that particular run in 1967.

Yes, I happen to own a copy of this booklet. I've owned it for a number of years.

Got a Hag and want to know more about it? Post your serial number and i'll tell you when your Hag was made. BTW, In 1973 all Hagstrom instruments had the prefix number 53 added to the beginning of the serial number of the instrument.

TBONE, your Swede guitar was made in 1974. It was the 55th one made in production run number 910. That production run produced 500 Swede guitars (not Swede bass).

Joe it was made in 1980. It was the 462nd Swede guitar made in production run # 054. That run produced 500 guitars.

Run 712 produced 999 Viking guitars in 1967. Yours was the 47th one made in that run.

I was told when I got it that it was from 1966, but I really would like to know for sure. I also have lots of other vintage gear from other manufactures that I would like to find out info for. Do you have knowledge for other makers of guitars and basses?

I recently inherited a Hagstrom hollow body, starburst, s/n 680919. I'm guessing '66 or '67 ? Is this a keeper, or something less ? It's in very good condition, with what looks like an original hard shell case (gold plush lining). New to Hagstroms, so any input is appreciated !

Thornton Davis..valuable service you are providing. If your catalog has serial numbers for Hagstrom electric guitars also, I would appreciate knowing when my son's ( who is no longer with us) was made. I've kept it since his death in 1993. The serial number is 732321. Thank you so much.
