Vocalists you feel epitomize rock n' roll

IMHO, rock singing is as much about feel as blues guitar playing is. It is plaintive, soulful and rebellious all at once. It's not about range or classical voice quality. There were many that did it well but I agree with those who put Little Richard, Elvis Presley (pre-Army) and John Lennon at the top. They were the R&R stylists who defined it for every one else who came after.

I gotta agree with Joan Jett. There are certainly many others listed who are also rock and roll "epitomized", but Jett I think deserves special consideration. A punk rock female, fronting her own band after the Runaways, making her music, her way, and kicking down so many doors in the process. When you think about the "boys club" that rock really is, the fact that she has, and continues to, succeed on her own terms, well, that's about as rock and roll as it gets. Plus, when you hear one of her songs, the only description that comes to mind is "That's rock and roll" (at least when I hear one).

I am not a fan of this band at all. But they hit the nail right on the head at a concert festival friday night. And, the singer was very impressive. Spot on.

Paul Rogers is still my favorite after all these years. But, honestly, rock music is centered around vocals as much as guitar to me so there are tons of greats out there.
