I'm thinking about doing one of these to use for bass (and occasional guitar) at church. I saw a clip of a guy on YouTube playing through the VT Bass that sounded ok. Is there a better Tech21 Character pedal for mostly bass and occasional guitar?

How often does a business exceed your expectations? Usually not often. But sometimes they do.

I sent my VT pedal to Mike at Putnamguitars last Thursday. Mike got it on Friday. He modded it and I received it back by mail on Monday. Now I know that it is probably not always going to be this fast, but I am utterly amazed. In addition when I talked to him on Thursday morning he told me that he was just getting over a very bad cold.

Three cheers for Mike and I am a customer for life.

By the way the mods were done perfectly and everything works great. When I was exploring several ideas with him he never seemed rushed or impatient with my questions or emails.
I am going to probably buy another VT or other Character pedal and I will buy it from him. Better to put money in the pocket of a good man than in the pocket of a stranger.

ya, mike's turnaround is crazy quick.

jarrett, a couple of guys on here are raving over the blonde pedal. and my putnam-modded british pedal is the shizz on bass as well. they also have pedals based on orange and hiwatt coming out that should be good on bass. haven't heard much about the mesa-based pedals on bass, though.

I have had many requests to add a Blue LED to your modded pedals, normally a $5 upgrade.
Until now, I have only offered a Free Blue LED as an option on the DI-MOD Phantom Deluxe.

as you can see, my british pedal has one extra knob now. it's for dialing in extra low response. i've only had a few minutes to play with it but i think mike has turned what could be a really good bass pedal into a great bass pedal.

ok, so the way it works is at 12:00 the new pot makes it stock. going to the right adds more lows. going to the left adds lows + changes the mid sweep. in what ways, i'm not sure yet, but i'll know more tomorrow when i can plug it into an amp. it's capable of generating feedback in its most extreme positions, but since you still have tons of tonal variety in the non-feedback generating positions, it's all good.

mike also added a di under the input jack, and the little switch on the front is to turn phantom power on and off + ground lift. i passed on the blue led, though. what can i tell you? i'm a red led guy. i have a modded rat pedal with the blue led and it's all i can see when it's on.

i'm sure i'll have more to report back about it as i use it on my gigs this week, but preliminary findings are quite positive, indeed. the british is a great pedal for guitar and a pretty good one for bass, but it seemed to be lacking that extra low end that bass needs. marshalls don't have much low end to begin with, and this pedal definitely reflects it. so mike suggested this mod to me and i bit. with this mod it'll bring out the lows and then some, to insane levels if that's your thing. or you can run it stock if you double on guitar like i do.

my wife also remarked how professional mike's work looked and how it looked like it was made that way. i have to agree 100%. if not for the "sansamp" being partially blocked, you'd think it was stock. and mike's turnaround time is insanely quick, which is always appreciated.

oh, i almost forgot...the best thing about this mod...since i was the first to have a character pedal modded this way, mike calls it the jimmy mod :D ask for it by name!

mike, it's really nice of you to extend an extra little something to talk bass members. very cool thing to do! :cool:

just wanted to let you know that i used both outs on my VT Bass yesterday for a performance and it worked great/sounded awesome. i sent my effected signal to the board and i ran the 1/4" out to my amp to use as a monitor. i believe this helped to solve some of the stage volume issues we were having. it's nice to have a little more control.

This XLR OUT mod looks great. I'm in! However, I'd be even more in if I could get a clean blend installed too. Basically, I want the functionality of the Bass Driver DI. Is this mod possible?

My distortions and micro synth get the high-end sizzle toned down a bit much with the VT after them. I just did a quick test using an LS-2 to add a clean blend to the VT with the Micro Synth being fed into that (the "clean" being the micro synth not being effected by the VT), and it only takes a little bit of blend to bring back some sizzle. A clean blend knob would do such a prettier job though- I already have 2 LS-2s on board.

As promised, here are some clips using the Putnam-modded Tech21 Blonde Character Series Pedal. All the clips are going through the Blonde pedal, out the DI to my Line6 TonePort UX-2, then USB into the computer via GearBox and recorded using Reaper.
