VT Bass Rackmount...

Why, then, do we have reports a high-end loss, which (as described) are identical to the high-end loss I experience with my RPM?

If it is a flat response, shouldn't the signal in bypass mode be identical to the signal when the unit is disconnected? I have not personally tried the VTRM, but my RPM sure changes the tone of my signal when it's bypassed.

Reports of high end loss? We have never received any reports of high end loss in the 10+ years we have been making these units. We check every unit on a scope before it leaves here and the bypass signal is one of the tests.

When you say "changes the tone," do you mean the bypassed signal is different from the sound of your bass plugged directly in without the RPM in the chain or the sound in bypass is different from the effected sound? As I said, with the blend off and the tone controls at their null point the bypassed signal and active should be the same. Sometimes if the control knobs are not put on correctly the settings may be off. We check the controls with a scope because the tolerance of a pot can vary as well.If you are experiencing a high end loss there must be something wrong with your unit. Please contact technical support for an RA so we can check it out. If the unit is under warranty it will be covered. The 1/2 hour bench charge is $30 to evaluate the unit though we don't charge if there is nothing wrong with the unit. We pay the return shipping when under warranty but you are responsible for the shipping when out of warranty. (This is for US repairs.)

Just ran the vtrm with the freesa software again and when the active button is out, there is no effect on the tone. When the unit is active and blended totally to the left with all controls flat, there is a roll off on the very high frequencies. Thats the fact. Now, with this unit I don't see people using it for a pristine clean blended tone so, it's not actually a big deal. Enjoy it.

I was playing more today and going back and forth between the nv610 and my 1212/5 prototype. I prefer using the vtrm in the send/return/post eq loop of my genz sm9.2 with the nv610. It really adds an upper mid emphasis that the nv610 needs sometimes. Sounds great. With the 1212/5, which is brighter and flatter without any dips in the response I prefered the straight genz with the vt switched out. It sounded alittle hard in the upper mids.

Direct to the pa, I prefered my ada speaker sim pedal to both. Although, I will have to try the vt into the ada, into the pa. That would probably kill. Thats part of what geddy lee does anyway.
 
Not in the case of running a passive or active bass into the VT Bass Rack or any of our other products. They are all designed with high impedance 1 meg Ohm inputs (RPM and Para Driver is 4.7 meg Ohm) so your instrument will not be loaded down and the outputs are all low impedance.

It doesn't matter if it's the RPM, RBI or VT Rack as they are all built on the same platform. If your unit is really darkening your tone when in the signal chain and in bypass that is not normal. Send it back and we will fix it. No worries.
Yes, all the Sansamp are designed with a high impedance instrument input... 1 megOhm minimum.
My question: is there an impedance mismatch between Sansamp #1 Out (low impedance) and Sansamp #2 In, when two units are chained as shown in the user manual.

An impedance mismatch will cause a HF suckout.
IMO, I would be amazed if the Sansamp recommended connection shown in the user manual was mismatched.
 
The more I use the VTRM, the more I become certain that it's my favorite SansAmp, ahead of both RBI/BDDI and RPM.

At some point I'd like to A/B the VTRM against RBI+RPM run in parallel, which was my previous favorite SansAmp rig, but then I'd have to try VTRM+RBI and VTRM+RPM. As much as I love sweep mid, I don't seem to miss it with the VTRM. But yeah, I would like to play around with VTRM+RPM, should be fun!

That is normal. I thought you originally meant in bypass mode. There is a compensation cap that rolls off around 8kHz which is not a musical frequency for bass or guitar. It only adds noise. The treble control only goes up to 3.2kHz. I guess I could find out if it can be defeated but I wouldn't recommend it.

No, the output of the rack mounts are low Z (1 kOhm & 600 Ohms ) and won't be loaded down going into a high or low Z input. You can always go low to high Z just not the other way around. If you plug a passive bass or guitar into a mixers low Z input you will hear a much darker tone. The only time using a Low Z output can be an issue is with some vintage effects that are germanium based like fuzz's and treble boosters. Those type of pedals need to be connected directly to an instruments high Z pickups to sound right.

The RPM manual shows how to chain two Sansamps.
  • RPM TS Out is 1 k-ohm (Lo-Z)
  • RBI Input #2 is 1 meg-ohm (Hi-Z)
  • Impedance transfer is correct, Lo-Out to Hi-In
The Gozouta (RPM1) is a lower impedance than the Gozinta (RBI), for an efficient transfer of power and no HF suckout.
Kinda like a big block V8 transfers power better when the wheels are on the ground vs up on blocks.
 
Had practise using the full pa tonight to work out some bugs. I ran the vtrm in the fx loop of the sm9.2, into the nv610. sounded great again. I ran the vt's di out to the pa with the channels treble rolled all the way off and bass pretty much rolled all the way off. It gave the clarity I wanted in the pa and nothing else so, that will work pretty good when using my regular rig. I turned the sub off and ran the vt with the channels bass flat and treble still all the way off. That will work well for the pa only, acoustic rock gigs. I could never use the vtrm as an electric gig di only unless I used my fdeck to roll off the deep lows. I hate the sound of bass through subs unless you have a really powerful eq in each channel of the board. I find this will all preamps and di's though, not just the vt.

I recently switched out my regular board for a simple behringer that just has gain, bass, treble, aux, fx and fader on each channel. A less is more kind of thing so that the other guys would have to fix their own sound instead of sending me crap and expecting me to make is sound good. It's really worked well. And there are really no knobs for the guitar player to turn when Im not looking. I actually like not having options at this point! :smug: The vtrm and nv610 are a good combo. My 1212/5 cab is going to have an attenuator on the mid and I think that if the mid is turned way down, the vtrm should sound great with it as well.

The VTRM and a pair of HS210 cabs are also a great combo. Of course the HS cabs were described as "close as you can get to an NV610 with a ported/tweetered design" so that's no big surprise.

I did the vertical stack last Saturday, I was amazed at how loud it got even with bass boosted to fill the room (got no FOH support that night). :cool:

It keeps the super low stuff out of the pa. I hate the sound of my bass through the subwoofer. Just turns into a mess out in most rooms. A steep roll off at around 100hz stops that but still keeps roundness and punch in your tone coming through the pa and my in ear monitors. I read somewhere that the soundguys for metallica roll off at around 70hz. I've been doing it for years and it just works for me.
 
I used the eq on my sm9.2 to simulate my settings on the vtrm and it sounds really good. My vt settings are
-Plug into rear jack with pad on since my bass is super hot
-drive 9:00
-Character 12:00
-blend full
-Bass 1 click right
-mid 2 clicks right
-treble 2 clicks left

Sm9.2 settings to simulate this
-global controls off
-bass flat
-low mid flat
-high mid frequency about 2:30 with gain maxed
-treble rolled all the way to the left

That makes my shuttle sound exactly like the vtrm with a clean setting. I used the freesa program to match the tones. I found that the pots on my solid state and tube channels aren't exactly matched so the high mid frequency position was a few clicks different from eachother.

Pretty cool stuff.
