More or less in the same boat here. I've had a VT for years and it's my main recording interface for my basses and is the last stage on my pedal board. I've considered getting the V2 version of the VT but my current box is doing the the job just fine. I've given Helix Stomp and Native shots--sold the Stomp fairly quickly--and neither offered anything on the bass front I'd use as an amp sim, which is totally mystery to me, as I'd had one of the old Bass Pods back in the day, and it was great. I've given Logic's built in stuff a spin too and had a little better luck than with the Helix stuff, go figure. I own the Amplitude Ampeg and Fender plugs but they've rolled that into some bigger package I don't feel like messing around with.

I've considered getting the V2 version of the VT but my current box is doing the the job just fine. Replaced it with the VT-DI around 2015. I still use the original VT at home though.
The V1 can be modded to have a switchable speaker sim. I should have mentioned that on the one I've got, Mike Putnam did that as well as adding the DI/XRL out and a ground lift switch.

it may be beneficial to just buy a new one with these features though, right?
a V1 vt bass must only have a street value of like $80? if the mod is expensive it may be cost prohibitive.
I guess the question is if it's cheaper than the alternative (V2, etc) if it's only the speaker sim bypass? - and if one otherwise prefers the V1 over the later versions. Could check with Putnam Buffalo Guitars - Custom guitars mods amps pedals effects speakers I imagine if it's just the switch it would not be all that much. Doing the DI and the two switches was about $100 on mine but the DI would be a much bigger job, I'd think - and that was in 2010 (just checked - time flies...)
EDIT: just checked his page - $60. P u t n a m G u i t a r s - MODS So, yeah, I'd only do it if I loved the V1 vs the other versions for some reason. I've moved on to the Shift Line myself. Maybe I should break it out again.

I don't know as I've never had the v2, etc; so others on this thread would be better able to answer.
Does the VT DI sound exactly like the VT v1 / v2 in terms of that particular SansAmp, which is an SVT right?
I also got my v1 of the VT Bass back when they first came out. It served as my preamp up until last spring when I replaced it with the SGT-DI.
I used to have the Deluxe version, many years ago, and I never liked it, it always sounded as if it was "subtracting" something from my sound rather than "adding".
Spent years and lots of money trying basically every iteration of the Bass Driver available, always ending up taking it off the board and thinking "oh, how beautiful it sounds now...without that thing".
To my surprise, what I am using now (and I have been for a few years) is a Joyo Orange Juice + Joyo F.O.H. combo. Insanely beautiful.

I’m looking for advice on replacing my Tech21 VT DI, which I somehow managed to fry yesterday. 
It's only letting the barest pitiful crackly squeaks through now. There was some kind of short which actually tripped my electric panel circuit breaker, but not before the damage was done. Wall circuits here are all 220v, by the way. I got a nasty shock as a side gift.
I doubt it's repairable in a cost effective way. I live in Portugal, shipping is high, and items coming back into the country are suject to steep VAT fees.

I love what Sansamp does for the sound of my passive basses, esp. my Ricks, and don't know how happy I'd be with other tube emulation pedals. I'm considering other Tech21 pedals, maybe even one of the fly rigs, (esp the hiwatt one) ,although I already have pedals for most efx I like.
But, l'm also all for streamlining my pedal rig in general. The fly rigs look really appealing esp from a user standpoint.

If using addt'l peripheral devices, I'd pass on the Fly Rig and look more closely at the XB (...or similar) as a keystone in your signal chain.

I love the idea of that pedal, but find the price off putting. I’ve owned a Landmark amp that essentially was the same concept,
(But with an amp included!
) for a similar price.
The VT Bass is still my favorite sounding SVT in a box. They got it right. All the features are prefect.
But if you want to explore something else...
The Aguilar Tone hammer gets you similar vibe and I like the sound of the drive a little better. It works better for a wider gain range if you know how to work the mids on the pedal. It can stand alone as a distortion if you want, but also does that low gain tubey things perfectly. Hard to find a pedal that does both so well.

I have a v1 with a ton of mods done by Mike Putnam. XLR out, parametric mid control, speaker Sim defeat switch, "Bite" knob. I really do love the pedal but ultimately got replaced by a Rusty Box and probably won't ever go back.
One thing I noticed when I A/B's with the Rusty is the same way people complained about the clank when going direct, which led them to add the Bite switch in the DI version, there's also this woofiness baked into the lows that you can't dial out. Rusty Box has a tighter low end.

Gotcha. In that case, I'd have no problem with Fly Rig v2. One caveat: I'm not sure if the BFR's VT is true to the original dedicated pedal as I've never owned one. Hoping somebody-in-the-know chimes in.
