VT Bass - Still on your board?

Variation on the theme: I use the VT platform on the Fly Rig v1...I've never used the dedicated pedal. Even if it's not an exact duplicate, the trade-off for the addt'l comp, tuner, boost, & DI is adequate compensation. That's the nice thing about Tech 21: as picky as we are, there's a pedal for everybody.

i still use my VT original version 1.

planning on getting the updated one, the only feature i need is to turn off the speaker sim when using an amp.

i'd like to run it direct into the power section of a high-powered amp for my next rig i think.

yes the amp in a box market is huge now. yes the helix can do a lot that's very compelling. but for me, the vt has everything i want, exactly how i want it. I use it all the time. i'm never mad at the sound i get - from warm and fat to crunchy and intense.

VT Bass Deluxe (programmable) for me. I've been using it for quite a while. I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. Very happy with it

Ditched preamp pedals (including VT) since I switched to active basses. Sadowsky Modern - J48 - desk works great. It is the sound engineer's job to mix, not mine. I don't need to sound like playing through an amp either.

I came to the same conclusion a few months ago too. It sounded very good! However I struggled with getting it dialed in for a church band I was in, because the EQ was so powerful and variable (a really big plus for some people!!). In the end, I wasn't using it like it should, and sold it.

Ironically, that group liked how i sounded better when I plugged straight in. Go figure!

I had one for a while and liked it ... but only for its Ampeg B-15 emulation. It seemed like its SVT emulation was the sound you get with the "Ultra Low" engaged, which I don't really care for. Once I got a Sushi Box Slampegg Bee Pre X, my VT Bass stayed in its box until a fellow TalkBasser offered to trade his Tech 21 Paradriver DI even up for it.

I used the DI version for a year or two. It was a nice preamp but not for me. Now I use a Fairfield Barbershop for always on OD and run that into a Kahn DI or Noble.

I got one not long after it came out when it was THE pedal to have. Not knocking it at all, tons of people have it and love it, but it wasnt for me. This is V1, the controls were pretty sensitive and I found it a little "clanky" sounding for me. Everyone had one at that time.

Having no actual need for it but I must get Geddy's YYZ and Moving Pictures pedals. The 2112 can function as a DI.

I still possess my VT DI, but mostly for sentimental reasons. I used it for years, and it's gotten so banged up that it would probably be hard to sell for a worthwhile value. So, I may as well keep it. But, I hardly ever use it anymore. I stopped using it when I got a Broughton Audio SVPre and Fliptop. The VT is more versatile than either of them individually, but I still preferred the sounds I got out of the Broughtons-- the Fliptop in particular.

During the sound check in a significant concert venue; we had some spare time so I ran a test with a trusted pro sound engineer. First; I went through my usual compressor - preamp - etc to the desk (all "clean" pedals) and he did his job. Then; I went direct through an active DI box, and he did his job once again. His conclusion was the same; he preferred the direct signal. I still use a tiny pedalboard in some gigs though (phaser, delay, B7K).

VT is still part of my signal chain for sure. I started out with the VT Deluxe with its 6 presets (or 3 for 2 inputs). Then, in an effort to shrink my pedal board I moved to the VT v.2 (and I would agree the switchable speaker sim is a nice option in general, although not so great for live).

Currently my go-to small board signal chain is:

Bass => Cali76 (parallel settings) => VT v2 (slightly favoring the B15 character) => Noble DI => FOH & amp/cab (if used).

v2 to warm up one of these (which is clean to the point of sterile when flat--great amp, though, really), and VTBDI at home for practicing and quick and easy home recording.

I love the "blend" function on the DI model. I don't (or very seldom) do anything with dirt, and the Character travels between noon and 10 o'clock. I don't know, these things just do the trick for me, in a small but important way! If Tech 21 had put a master volume on the VTBass 1x12 combo, I'm sure I'd be using that.

Have the modern version of this on my board. Active Carvin SB5001 going into it at the moment. I use the cab sim, because it takes the harshness of the Carvin preamp and tones it down. That goes for any bass, I always put the cab sim on because a raw bass signal, even with an onboard preamp, needs that extra EQ curve IMO. I want the finished sound in my ears, not that raw harsh sound that FOH gets before they EQ it for the mains.

I used my original from the year it was first released until last year. I used it in front of a Markbass SA450 that was super clean and needed grit. For a long time it was my only pedal besides a tuner. But when I switched my head to a Tome Hammer I found it redundant. Now I usually plug directly in to the tone hammer and use a clip on tuner. I love the simplicity.

When I do use my full pedal board, I have switched to a Grizzly Bass for grit. It can do the slightly compressed wooly tone I wanted from the VT. I could switch back to the VT and still be happy but the thrill is gone.
