In the thread introducing the VT deluxe I tossed out the idea of seeing if we can put together a Talkbass group purchase - it seems as though plenty of us are plenty interested!

To do that, I think we'd need a) someone with a connection at Tech21; and b) a bunch of committed folks.

This thread, perhaps, can arrange both things.

1. If you have a contact at Tech21 and would be willing to approach them, please post and say so. Otherwise I can do a "cold call" but it sure would be easier if we had a contact.

2. If you're interested in (and willing to commit when the time comes) to being part of a group purchase - post and say so.

3. If you've arranged group purchases before, feel free to PM me - this just seemed like such an obvious idea to me that I put the idea out, but I haven't done this and would be interested in hearing "best practice" or "horror stories" that would make it go more smoothly.

I'm interested but not necessarily willing to commit. I bet JAUQO III-X and Tombowlus have connections at Tech21.

The one "horror story" I can think of is the question of who handles service after the sale. One of the (many) reasons that manufacturers do not sell direct is that they do not want the added cost of interacting with individual customers. I may be mistaken in the details, but I recall one of the DPLE group-buy bass models had a bunch of QC problems, and then there were major hassles between the Dude and Lakland and the individual buyers. Who is responsible? So I'd say just make sure your name isn't down as the vendor or responsible party, and see to it that questions of service after the sale will be answered by a specific person or office at T21.

Not to be a negative nancy. But if a vender sold the product at cost how would he make money? The way the economy is I do t see how a vendor would be willing to take a hit like that. Were a huge part of pedal purchasing. I see better luck dealing with the manufature than with a vendor. But even then the manufature wouldn't want to hurt the sales of his vendor.

I'm not interested in being part of the group buy, but if you want someone to go through, might I suggest Jive? He runs a bass shop that stocks Tech 21 products. If he is up for it, that could be a good route to take.

i have to say that i'm not interested in beating down the price $20 and dealing with the hassles of group buying. it sounds like a good idea at first but they never go well. just wait till there's a sale.

Group purchase? Is that buying a bunch of pedals at wholesale price?
It's buying a large (agreed on) number of a single model of product for a reduced (usually not wholesale) price.

It is rarely done through a vendor, because they would not make any money. It is almost always done directly with the manufacturer. It doesn't hurt vendors much, because it is done one time, for one specific group of buyers, at one fixed quantity. In this way it is not any different from a retailer buying that same quantity for store stock. The only way it hurts retailers is in the sales lost to the specific members of the group that did the buy-in.

If it means that I can get one earlier than they intend to have them in-stock at Tech 21 dealers, than I'm in.

If it means that I won't get one any earlier, but could potentially save a few bucks, I'm not in. I'm with Jimmy in that if it's just for a cost savings it doesn't really appeal to me to go in on a group purchase. My interest is exclusively based on the timeline, not the price.

By increasing his sales volume and getting to the next discount column on his order sheet. The trick is finding someone who's close enough to that next column that something like this would be worthwhile for them. I've been offered smoking deals on some items when a vendor was opening a new account and had to fulfill the minimum buy-in requirement as well.

well if we're talking that much off, i'd be willing to go along with it. but who could do it? i can't. i've sent a couple emails to lloyd and he's a real nice guy on emails, but that's about it. wouldn't call it a relationship or anything. plus i'm a lousy salesman.
