Well, if the friend was a shoe-in they wouldn't bother auditioning others. Obviously, they've got some need for musicianship over friendship first.

I had been watching this band for a few years because that are local to me and were always out playing. They are booked solid thru New Years.

I had also been networking with the guitarist and we had been exchanging emails over the last year.
I am a little surprised he didn't tell me before hand they were bringing in a friend, but he might not know what that means to those of us on the other side of the fence.

Congrads Blue on finally giving a blues band a shot, something you said in the past you would never do. Blues bands are in demand and are normally booked year long from ones I know that are good...everybody digs the blues.

On the Friend thing, If it goes to him that does suk but remember it was only between him and you and maybe he wont last long or tou can always ask them to sub. You never know he might not be a fit or be as good of a player as you ..wait and see.

If you "belong on stage", then you'll have to find a way to tolerate this process. It's just part of the game.

I auditioned for, and won, a position in a cover band last weekend. We've got our first gig in about 6 weeks. It was the first band I auditioned for since my last broke up, but I got lucky.

I can tolerate the process, right now I guess I need some luck.

This is a good opportunity.

At least you found out... It may be a situation of... "we HAVE to let our friend try out cause he's our friend." you could take that as a knod to you that you played good and they are doing him a favor by going thru the motions.

Personally if i was doing auditions i would have kept it to myself and just said ... "we got a couple more people we are looking at."

Sure he's got a few points on you as rapport is already established.

most likely they told the other guy the only other person auditioned was a "friend of the guitarist". be positive! that's the best way i know to get positive results.

I have been luckier than the rest of my old band mates.

I have been busy and have prepared for and have had 3 auditions since the band broke up. The other guys have had nothing. Keep in mind because of TB I have become a lot more open minded.

Tough break, Blue. Hang in there. Kinda would piss me off that they're auditioning guys even though one of the current dude's buddies is coming in...

but maybe that's just a temporary thing. Don't count yourself out yet...

quick story for ya...

I was actually helping out an original band comprised of some buddies of mine who had a big show booked WHILE they were in the process of auditioning bass players. I literally met two of the guys they auditioned. I showed up for rehearsal as one guy had just finished trying out, and the next day, I met another guy as he showed up to audition as I was packing my stuff up after a rehearsal...

I think it threw off the guys that were auditioning, but my buddies quickly reminded the guys that I was just helping the band out for an upcoming gig they already had booked.

Maybe there's more to the story. Just be cool with them and maybe they'll keep your around for later.

Hey Blue - how about 2 bands. One coverband for the gigging opportunities and another for the music.

If you can swing it I've also found an additional benefit of 2 bands is that it's easier to dismiss any of the band drama BS for any one of the bands.

Keep in mind because of TB I have become a lot more open minded.

There are no other opportunities to persue right now, just loser originals and start up projects. No thanks

everyday people can't tell the difference between a well rehearsed class act and bunch of losers.

Exactly, that why when people hear ther word "originals" they are predisposed to automatically think "it's crap". A lot of it is.

People are just stupid when it comes to music.

Never judge other musicians, and especially never judge your potential audiences. They might seem like idiots or losers to you, but they can make or break you in a market where you're still a relatively newcomer.

Ah, Come on. Blue's just got a little smidge of exit anger, that's all. Once he gets a gig he's happy with, those negative experiences will start getting replaced with positive ones, and he'll change his tune.

The community is smaller than we think and I can't afford a bad Rep. Keep in mind I told the cargo shorts wearing losers that I would continue to work on their set list and would like to be considered for sub work or to audition again if the Guy doesn't work out.

suggest you take it at face value... what do you really have to lose?
