Wal Bass Club.

Here's my 1993 WAL Custom.
Ordered on 4/3/93, received on 7/21/93 from The Bass Centre, Studio City, CA.
I requested the same body woods as Geddy Lee's bass.
I paid $3,043.00 and that was with the flight case.
Sorry for the picture quality, I'll try to snap a better one sometime soon.

I can't tell from your photo, 4001 -- is that ebony or indian rosewood on your fingerboard. (check the label inside your control cavity if you're not sure...)

At last time for some Wal setting updates - try these ones:

fretless 5 (sported sycamore faces):
1) neck at 10, bridge at 3/4 depressed, blended at 20/80 -mmmwaaah
2) neck at 0, blended 100/0 - massive attack/dub sound

fretted 5 (olive ash faces):
1) neck 10, bridge 5 pulled, blended 50/50 - growly & driving - perfect for some distortion+chorus on bass

you can listen to these settings here:

Hey Oliver

Thanks for posting those settings and clips.

Mine is a fretted MkII custom. I find that setting the neck p/u at 0 and using it alone gets way too muddy live. It seems more useful in the studio setting, or blending it with the bridge p/u. Those deep deep lows however quite a sound to hear!

I do enjoy keeping the neck p/u open at 10. There's something very 'complete' to that sound. Very musical. Sometimes I drop some of the highs off by setting it around 8, which starts to get that 'envelope filter' type sound to it.

95% of the time both of mine are played at 10 on the neck and 8 on the bridge, blend centered, all knobs down.
Only time I stray is neck pot pulled and set around 6 for a 'lil more complex mid snarl, and then the occasional roll to the neck pickup only for some Precision type honk.

I'll agree neck set on 0 and blend on neck only is insane sub lows, especially with the pot pulled shakes everything on the walls.

Hey Caca

When the room acoustics suck, or I'm playing through an unfamiliar amp, both pickups set at 10 with the blend at 50/50 and all knobs depressed seems to nail it every time. Everything is wide open, balanced and clean sounding. Plenty of highs, lows and everything in between.

Having the bridge pickup at 8 isn't a far cry from that. Gives it some character.

Getting in the middle settings, 4 - 7, certainly introduces the snarly, grinding, envelope filter type sounds. The possibilities seem endless.

Anyone live in the UK that would be willing to call Paul of Wal? I live in the US and it is a ridiculous hassle for me to try and get international calls from my phone provider.

Best way to call from US is to get an international calling card. Working in DC a few years ago they were easy to get at a liquor store. And there are specific ones for country or region. Won't take too much to call a couple of times. Pete even answered the phone!

I wonder if the ones with opaque painted necks were made more simply or if your label is just omitting some detail?

I have ammassed a huge picture album, and the labels do have inconsistancies...some show more datail, some seem like they were rushed when writing, and some with mistakes or crammed writing you'll wonder why they didn't restart with a fresh piece if tape.
On the opaque finishes, you can hold/angle the bass in the light and see the way the finish settled over the laminate stringers to see they are still multi-piece necks.
