Hi there,

I don't have the Ritter anymore since there were a lot of constructional/technical issues with this very bass.
Soundwise it was also very piano-like but not as organic, three-dimensional, warm, defined and thunderous across the fretboard and especially in the lows as the Wals are. Ritters sound very clinical to my ears and they have a sensational attack - more like LeFay basses - more zing.
Compared to that of the 5string WALs, I also found the fretboard of the 5string Ritter harder to play, since it compared more to the size of a regular 6string board and the neck was not as comfortable and fast. This was particularly evident when playing the lowest registers on the Ritter. It is more of a tapping bass.
On the other hand, the Ritter weighed in at about 4kgs whereas the Wals are real backbreakers at 5 - 5.5 kgs - But here's where the real tone starts I reckon ...

I absolutely LOVE my Wal.

It took me a while to really understand the preamp filters.

I've found a couple of setting that I like.

1) The neck pickup at 10, the bridge at 0, blended at 50/50. All knobs remain depressed.

2) The neck pickup raised at 3, the bridge pickup at 10. The pick attack is on for this setting (raised volume knob) and I favor the neck pickup.

Anyone else care to share their settings?

At this moment, I was told if your name is called then it's an 11 month wait. Earlier in the fall it was a 5 month wait, so he must bee getting quite busier with orders now.
But that means you have to get on the waiting list first for your name to be called, so that could take months.

Unbelievable... I simply must have one! I've promised myself I would order one for my 40th B-Day. I can't tell you how psyched I am that they are building again!.

At last time for some Wal setting updates - try these ones:

fretless 5 (sported sycamore faces):
1) neck at 10, bridge at 3/4 depressed, blended at 20/80 -mmmwaaah
2) neck at 0, blended 100/0 - massive attack/dub sound

fretted 5 (olive ash faces):
1) neck 10, bridge 5 pulled, blended 50/50 - growly & driving - perfect for some distortion+chorus on bass

How do you get on the waiting list? Just call him? He doesn't seem to respond to email.

Here's my 1993 WAL Custom.
Ordered on 4/3/93, received on 7/21/93 from The Bass Centre, Studio City, CA.
I requested the same body woods as Geddy Lee's bass.
I paid $3,043.00 and that was with the flight case.
Sorry for the picture quality, I'll try to snap a better one sometime soon.

And no good reason for the saddle alignment apart from me messing about.. I found it got a particularly thwacky and fat sound on the E string for one song, and it just stayed that way! However, that's one of the reasons it's going for a visit to Mr Electric Wood at High Wycombe soon (as well as the crackly pan pot, though I won't let him polish out the playing scuff!). I have a terrible feeling that if I continue with that extra-high action I'll either get arthritis or things will accidentally just crumble into dust every time I grab them..
