Thanks dude. The Thompsons don't have much in common with the Wal at first sight- they're passive, light weight, balanced, woody, and a pretty non-traditional body shape.

That said, both Wal and CT basses are totally handmade in very small workships, unbelievably solid, have huge tone, take forever to be built, and are some of the very best instruments being made. I think of both as really important and revolutionary builders in the boutique bass world.

Not that I expect much for a while but I was curious as to what other people's experience's were.

Well I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I placed my order with an approximate 17 month delivery window and I haven't heard anything about my neck yet. He quoted me 3-4 months approximate for start on the neck. In about two weeks I'll be approaching the nine month mark. I've already paid for more than half the cost of my Mk1 so I assume he won't be contacting me for the neck fee. I'm beginning to think that he's had a major increase in orders over that last six months or so and is swamped. I know it will be worth it but that still doesn't make the wait any easier.

Someone talk me out of wanting a Wal. Never played one. Only been playing bass for 10 months. Their tone is unmatched and my favorite bassists plays one (Justin Chancellor). I check their website every few months and drool over them.

Not sure how some of you own multiple Wal's at 6.5k a pop.

you can definitely do that...you'll need about $850 for the first initial deposit though....then there's shipping/custom tax to consider as well.

if you want to be talked out of one there's two ways that it can go...you get one, decide you don't like/or think its ok and let it hang around until you decide to resell it......or two LOVE IT and GAS for more!!! its very hard to be satisfied with just one Wal, so be prepared to go into starvation mode....less you wanna do what's been discussed before, but new studies found this:

I assume I could use the years worth of savings for the inital deposit. How does it work? You pay the initial deposit, then do you pay as more pieces are added to the bass?

Also, I think 1 Wal would be enough. I birdseye maple 4 string Mk 2 with ebony or gloss black neck with regular headstock. :) I've already picked it out..

The JC thing seems to be a popular one. Here's mine. I think DR. John has one too.

On new builds its a £500 deposit, £1000 when Paul starts the neck, and remainder due upon completion. With paypal fees, customs and shipping this one was about $7000 USD. Obviously exchange rates vary. I figure about $500 USD disappeared into the ether due to paypal fees, and customs to the US is 5% of stated value.

Nibs, one additional comment too is that you got yours prior to the price hike..... It may end up being more $$ for new prospective buyers.

It's funny that most Wal basses mentioned in some ways are either the black Geddy Lee or the Justin Chancellor derivatives. Funnily enough this was the reason I went for sycamore facings rather than birdsedye maple as I wanted something different from the norm. The base price went up £200 whilst I was swithering and saving cash. The irony is I actully have all the money now and now have to wait for another year. Idiot!! However, no big deal.

Definitely the wrong place to be talked OUT of buying one, but more, it's a bad influence on those wanting to stick with just one! I bought the Mk I at the beginning of this thread from Jim, and I'm now moved on to focus on my newest bass, which is an American Fender P-Deluxe that I'm blacking out, much like the Roger Waters bass (only better and more balanced). I bought my Wal because I really wanted the tone (had never played one before), the older ones are becoming more scarce, and they still leave a lasting impression. If you're a Geddy Lee fan as I am, digging into the D string is a dead giveaway in the tone, and nobody's replicated that Wal vibe.

Talked out of one yet?

You know, while I knew what Geddy was playing back then, I'm not a Geddy fan, although I did see them twice. It was the sounds of Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magic and Failure back in the 90's. My buddy was a Geddy fanatic, and we lived a driving distance to the Bass Centre and we went. So around '94 the first Wal I got to hold and play was a black MkI...even though I had no idea how to operate the knobs. I remember I actually hated the looks of the natural wood ones hanging in the store...for some reason I really disliked the contrast differences in the core and faces, especially the maple veneer stripe/sandwich I really hated that! Well, that was my reason for wanting a black one.

Isn't it funny how tastes evolve! And now you have a nice collection ;)

Back in 94' I was in high school and hated seafood! Now I love eating lobster rolls, sushi, and salmon!! Yums!!!!!!

Finally got mine! MkII 5 strings with walnut facings. Looks and sounds stunning!
