I would LOVE to own a Wal, but the price. My God. LOL. I don't know how you guys do it. :)

I have an MTD 435 I bought used for 2300 and I though that was bad. Well not bad, just expensive.

I am dreaming of having the money when one comes up used for a decent price. It never happens.

I've had a Wal for something like 2 years now, and to this day it still amazes me. Aside from how great it sounds and how versatile it can be, just the construction alone is unmatched. I live in Montreal and the changes in humidity and temperature affect all my other guitars pretty dramatically, I have to intonate each one every season, with the Wal, I barely have to touch it once it's set up, the neck doesn't move. I'm still looking for an all black Geddy with ebony board, but that's just cosmetics, I can't see myself ever playing another bass. It was pricey and took many years to find and accept paying for it, but it's something I'll have forever, really an end game instrument.

Hey all. The Wal MKII is by far my dream bass. I just can't get over that tone. Filter pre-amping in a bass is my favorite feature. Wals are built masterfully and sound gorgeous both clean and dirty.
I am currently 19 and would like to go on in music as a tech, a performer, or a teacher. I do setups for all my buddies and I'm one of the cheapest in town. (The guitar shops hate me, Pawn shops love me) Now I currently have about $4k for college/Wal fund. My goal is to reach $12k-$15k that way I can grab a professional instrument then go off to college for Jazz performance/instrument maintenance and instruction. I emailed Wal about an order. Ideally an MKII fretted with Shedua facings, abalone inlays, and some form of a number on the headstock in case it were to ever go missing. I received a reply from Paul I believe it was and he told me that if I was serious about getting one of these instruments that it would be about a 20 month wait before it ships overseas to Canada. If that is the case I'd like to look in the used market before waiting almost two years.
Is this wait normal? Obviously its worth it but a lot can happen in two years and I'm worried about a drop in communication somewhere along the way.
How many of you collected your Wals from the shop vs used?
Any info is greatly appreciated! :D

got mine used and needing repairs.

The benefits to buying new is that you can spec out your bass, it will be immaculate when you get it, on warranty, and you can pay over time. But, you have to wait about 2 years to get it and you will pay almost double what you would for a good used one.

The issue with buying used is that you have to have ALL of the money. It may not be "pristine" but even a good played-in used Wal can easily cost you >$5000 (usd).

My advice...you're young. You will have a Wal some day when you can afford it without compromising your financial position. Just buy a good bass. Buy used. Save your money for your education. Nobody is going to judge you less of a player because you don't have a Wal.

No, i dont believe so. Wal first introduced the the 5 string as a mk2 only..... be kind of weird to see a 21 fret 5 string lol. Later mk3 was introduced and then the 6 string mk3 (only available as mk3).

Trevor's Wal history is very informational as far as time line and also the out of the ordinary builds like the fender body that hopper has.

well if you think about having a 5 string is to get lower not higher so i dont se any point of having 24 frets ;) .
Its the Mk1 body shape i love! but I'm sure it will be neck heavy with a 5 sting? Thats why the other shape i guess?
Well I got a dream! (as someone ones said ;))
