So, I've played two very different types of gigs with her. The tone for a rock gig I've got. However, I have a question in regards the preamp. What are your "knob" settings for a vintage "P" bass type of sound? We play a lot of standards from Sinatra/50's to Motown 60's/70's.

I'd really dig a MKII 4-stringer!
I have a MkIII.
To get a sound better for a more P tone, I'd push everything to the B pickup.
Probably roll the tone knob to 3 or 4, not pulled. Depending on the mix.
JKernodle and BassJaymi put up nice YouTube videos going over settings.
I finally got my Wal back after sending it off to be refurbished. It originally had a clear finish like the ProI pic.
I had it refinished in the 80's because the body was damaged. Also had it fretted.
It needed some work with tightening up the electronics and I also wanted to make it fretless like it was originally and it now looks like.

Try rolling almost all the way to the neck pickup, roll the bridge filter down to zero and pull it out. Then play around the the neck filter to roll off the highs to your taste. You get a nice bass boost from the bridge filter being pulled out that gets you more p bass booty than just using the neck by itself, but you have to use a little bridge pickup in the mix to get the boost effect.

For mellower/traditional: I roll filters down to about 4.5-5 on both, and pan two notches toward the B neck pickup, keeping just a tad of bridge pickup still adds low end and a hair of definition in a live setting.

It's been mentioned here before that some of you get string sets with custom gauges, how do you go about actually getting them? I recently switched to a set of 30-90's that I like a lot, but ended up breaking the G string and replacing it with a .40, which I really like because the .30 was flimsy. I use DR Hi-Beams and usually order strings from Strings and Beyond, but can't find any way to order custom sets, and ordering 2 sets just for the one string will get pricey.

Everyones goona hate me for it but I put a set of octave up strings on my Wal yesterday for a project that I'm working on that requires some crazy sounds. Ill be running this bass through either a cranked svt or a guitar rig or some combination of the two. .020P .028W .035W .050W. Very cool sounds 
I've ordered build your own sets from bass strings online. I was using d'addario nickels in .100 .070 .055 .040 for a while and they give you a very consistent feel. I ordered those guages based on tension at pitch to get as close to matched as I could. I've since switched to the factory balanced lx nickel set with the .107 e string because I wanted a little more tension. either set should run you well under 20 bucks.
