So, for the Mk III, what I call "pointing finger" head-stock, I wonder if it was made longer than the older ones to address a dead note, or just to fit in with the 6-string? It would make sense to add a little more wood to improve that, and possibly the idle sitting balance. Now, the Mk II looks more balanced than the Mk I. Does the Mk III have a lighter body than the Mk II, and needs a bigger headstock to re-balance it? My mind wanders.

The Mk3 does have a lighter body than the Mk2 in both 4- and 5-string versions. The Mk3 headstock is actually smaller, but the 4-string headstock just isn't symmetrical on the 4 the way it is on the Mk1 and Mk2. The Mk3 also uses compact lightweight tuners, unlike the big Schallers on the Mk1 and Mk2.

Yeah, that's true about the smaller tuners. I'm sure one aspect that makes my Mk I neck heavier is it came with the "dumbo" tuners of the early 90's.

The Mk3 is a perfectly balanced bass. I can sit down in playing position, and let go of both my hands and the bass stays in play position without teetering either direction. Also the lower leg contour is the most comfortable of all three, followed by the Mk1. The Mk2 leg contour is not comfortable while sitting and is really short so it digs into your leg, and at times I feel my leg tingling if I'm sitting with it for long periods. And that short contour is positioned way back, you let go of the bass and the headstock darts down toward the floor.

The headstock was just made to stay consistant with the bodystyle.
And my Mk3 is over a pound lighter than my Mk2 (4 strings that is).

To get all black tuners was an upcharge.....but then again not sure if it was just because of the black string tree. :***:

This is a bit odd. I just checked my Spec sheet and it specifies chrome tuners but there is no up-charge. I don't know what to think at this point. Also does anyone have a clue as to what the Hipshot X-tender model is for the Mk3 tuners? I just looked at your purple Mk3 5 picture again and I was wondering what stringers did you have put in the neck? Are they ebony or is that just a trick of the finish?

Just posted my fretless MK2 5 string in Classifieds.......the previous owner was Leo Valvasori who played with Alannah Myles.
The original owner only had it 1 year before Leo go it. It is a GREAT bass. I'll probably change my mind again and keep it, who knows.
As always, I will look at Wal trades.....or other brands listed in my ad.
