That was my guess, too. Protection. It works, but when I change basses it can be annoying having to switch back over to another right angled cable.

Does yours wiggle a bit when the cable is inserted? Feels like there's a bit of play on mine. Doesn't seem to affect anything sound wise. Was just concerned. It doesn't look like there's anyway to tighten it and I wasn't sure how it came out. Your photos reveal what that part of the jack actually looks like. Very cool.
If yours wiggles, its loose.
You tighten it by removing the two screws holding the jack plate. Hold the jack still with pliers (in the control cavity), then with your fingers rotate the outside jack plate til its tight.
Realign your screw holes and put them back in.

It is the same on my Wal Mk1. It also has an imput jack that accepts angled cables, and it also wiggles a tiny bit. No sound issues whatsoever.
as what Caca mentioned earlier. if it feels loose, it just means that the jack isn't tightened.
you could tighten it as Caca described by removing the two screws of the housing and rotating it to tighten up the jack. i would advise though to be careful of the XLR cap. these can easily break if your not careful.
The wiggling may not be a problem now, but it is eventually too much flexing on the solder joints, and the main reason the legs of the xlr cap breaking off.

But what if the plate doesn't or can't turn the whole way around (180 degrees)? It's really only gotta go a little. Which means I would need to tighten the plug side then having to desolder and stuff. Not fun. I'll look more into it, but I just played it yesterday and there's really no sound issues.
Good call, guys! Many thanks. I already had to solder the cap that bridges the jacks. It came off and there was some nasty feedback. That cap does quite a bit. I take it a grounding thing?
On another note anyone ever use the millennia media td-1 pre? I read a user using one with a Wal. He was ecstatic about it.

It'd better be at that price tag. My oh my. I used an Avalon U5 and already thought that was preamp overkill
Hi, after 10 days, I finished reading all 398 pages of this thread and decided to join TB, just because of you guys . It seems to be a nice community here. I don't own a Wal bass yet, but I have been intrigued by them for 35 years. Now, I am about to order an MK3 from Paul, so I can join the club in two years... Maybe some of you are aware of the symptoms I am going through right now: Mentally, I am living in a Wal zone; listening to Wal music all day, thinking about the new bass when I go to sleep, thinking again about it first thing in the morning etc. Information-wise, reaching the end of this thread is like a full brake application - it's hard to have to actually wait for the next post...
Anyway, moving the thread forward, I wanted to share that German print magazine 'Bass Professor' has an Invalid Link Removed with some nice pics on Nick Beggs' former MK2 fretted 5-string, which according to the text is currently owned by a collector from Nuremberg, Germany.

I'm sure 2112 has the real answer but here's my additional answer which is kinda facetious but I'll bet has an element of truth to it...
If the jack socket wasn't recessed it wouldn't match the XLR half as well when you were using both together...

Yes Nick Beggs' Mk 2 5 is now owned by a guy with several nice Wals including an early JG.
And Nick's infamous black Pro from the Too Shy video is owned by a guy over on basschat.
You'll have to tell us what kind of specs your dream Mk3 consists of
