I got this directly from Paul:
"Our pickups have a fairly high output so it's not necessary to have them set too close to the strings. We recommend not to have the pickups set too high as they have a powerful magnetic field that can interfere with the strings natural vibration. The overall pickup heights are set and measured whilst holding down(fretting) the E and G strings at the 21fret. The distance between the top of the pickup pole piece and the bottom of the string should be approximately 6mm on the E string and 5.5mm on the G string approx. Yes, you could raise them slightly but just be aware the closer the string to the pickup, the louder the output, also given more of an "edge" and compression. You may have to adjust the input level on your amp if you find it overloading."
