...and bassplace- does your bass sya 'custom Bass' or 'Pro Bass'? I'm really interested to know if there are any others out there with the paddle headstock AND multi-laminate bodies...

Yes to "Custom Bass" but ProIIe with everything else. Ash or alder body, can't remember. Mine has other oddities... rear-loaded and a JG sn. Built in '81 though.

It is currently at aoguitars for a defret, and electronics rehab. May have it refinished too. Not sure yet. It was originally fretless and a natural finish.

Wow! Very cool! I have never seen one quite like that! It seems '81 was an interesting year for Wal... lots of changes, lots of transitional instruments, and every one seems to be a little different than the rest. Thanks for posting pics!

I still have to get the setup dialed in to my liking.

It really plays well. The finished neck is a change as well as the radius on it. It feels nice in my hand.

What strings are people using? I normally use Ken Smith nickles medium.

Only from Wal, or some place in England unfortunately. I've looked and they're like a british metric thread...stumped every screw and fitting supplier in the Seattle area. So I just order them from Paul.

Oliver, when I went to Wal workshop to collect my mkII I had a long and interesting chat with Paul, and I remember he said that one of his preferred Wals was your sycamore mkI; he was very satisfied with how the finish came out ;-)

My family is down one since I passed my 84' Mk I to a fellow local TB'er. surely that one will be missed since that's my first Wal that i've owned that I let slip away.

Same with me. My fretless MK1 sounds like no other bass I've owned.
It sits in the mix so well.
