I believe it has to because of the iconic images of the MkI and MkII both being used onstage and videos by so many pros. The III just didn't get the camera time since it came way later in the game. But I think the III looks absolutely killer, I just wish I could find a used 4string and not have to pay the price of a new one.
But with that said, none of my MkI's neckdive. They're very comfortable.

I've owned several of each and the mkII is absolutely my least favorite. It's too big and heavy, I think the sound is duller than the other two, and I don't like the looks as much as the other two.

Fedex has came and gone.
Basking in the glow of a 1985-Wal Mk1 fretless.
Wenge facing unlined ebony fingerboard.
This I believe was Zendner's old bass.
Big thanks to RBM for a sweet deal.
This bass has midrange for days. Tight defined, Wal tone.
Neck is joy to play. Workmanship is outstanding.
I get it people, there is magic in this Wal wood.
This is a keeper.

I'm surprised RBM let it go... he was losing his mind over that bass when he got it from me! He seems to be really interested in the subtle differences in sound between different wood facings, and he said he was particularly fond of wenge... interesting.

Play it well! That bass has been AROUND! It was sold at 'TheLowEnd' at one point... it's one of the oldest posts in the 'Wal Sold' gallery.

I'm pretty happy to be a part of the club again... loving my new Wal (as seen on page 11 of this thread). Does anyone else have one of the old 'custom' basses?

It's a bit premature, i know. But i'm excited nonetheless! Paul just sent me picture of the neck for my forthcoming MkII. Purpleheart inlays on ebony!

Is it too early to get a number? haha

An old friend is coming back home.

Mike Z. I saw pics of another new build Wal from someone's facebook page from when he went to the shop to pick his up. There was a body and neck hanging above the bench and it looked to be a really fully-loaded 5 string. Well, even though he won't make me a maple board:hmm: Paul sure is turning out some very nice basses.

I tell you what...
I really have to get the hang of the preamp settings. I had to raise the action as I'm probably not a very gentle player and the fret buzz was more than I could handle. I clipped and restrung that G string and took it down to play.
It's pretty strong in the mids, but the bottom end doesn't seem thin at all despite the reputation.
It really plays nice and is super responsive. It really takes me back to a midrange tone that used to be more of my sound than lately.
