Frankly, I am astonished by the shipping cost. Within the last year I have had two basses shipped from the UK to US East Coast, including a Wal from a dealer and the shipping cost on each of those came out below $150. It is possible these were "self-insured" and used regular UPS international service (6-7 days in transit) rather than an express service, but still.
I travel to the UK once in a while and have brought back a bass on the flight home. That's a good option if you combine it with some sort of vacation but it gets expensive compared to shipping if the only reason for going is to transport the bass. You might be able to get a round trip ticket a bit under $700 if you travel at the right time of year but then you need a hotel and probably will have to pay for an extra item of luggage (the bass). You should also be paying duty on arrival in the US which seems to be rarely followed up on if it is shipped.
Last week I headed to the mothership to take my bass in for a service. What a lovely and patient guy Paul is.

While it is a bit outrageous from Wal, I'm thinking your other sellers ate a bit of the cost to ship overseas.
In the last 8 months I sold two Wals to folks here in the US, and my workplace has a fedex account; the first bass from WA to CO was $180, and the other went to MD and was $215. And that was insuring at full Wal going rates!
I shipped a Spector to Sweden with USPS for $215 but only came with 500.00 insurance which the buyer would be responsible for shipping damage or loss of bass. I packed it like it would be thrown into the Grand Canyon. Thank God it arrived in Sweden a week later and in one piece!
I remember buying a couple of basses from a small boutique dealer he would only ship FedEx, at the time they had a much better reputation than UPS. Recently on TB and other sites have heard how bad FedEx has become! When my Wal is ready between the case and Paul’s packing pretty sure the bass will arrive in one piece. ( still knock on wood) It’s Fedex not doing their job and holding it for a couple of weeks and I live twenty minutes from their damn world headquarters
Mike I know we both sent our deposits the same month hopefully we will be getting emails from Paul soon.
Part of the cost is those fantastic boxes Paul uses. They have 1" thermal panels for insulation and thick spaced protection. The boxes with thermal liners are large enough to ship a flight case!
Was the figured maple top & back one of the standard wood offerings, or was there an upcharge for that as well?

Unfortunately that top also required a substantial upcharge. The standard offerings were an absolute disappointment. It made for a very unpleasant surprise considering I had provided examples of the tops I was looking for well in advance of the initial offerings. I expected a much higher grade given the starting price point.
At least it's finally slated to arrive today. I managed to get it through customs in less than a day which should make the overall transit time < 3 days.
Would you mind sharing the pictures of the standard offerings ?
Here's the initial set of both flamed maple and quilt maple tops (as I was considering both). In truth, all of these still carried a smaller upgrade charge, so "standard" may not be the best label.
