I picked my Mk2 up as a vacation with the wifey in 2018.
British Airways would absolutely not let me bring inside the plane, and not even passed check-in! I had to leave it with the pile of golf club bags in the oversize luggage area. The only way they said I could bring it on, is if I bought my bass its own seat. But flight was fully packed, alas no extra seats available.

Once I got back to Seattle airport, Customs officer said I get $75 duty credit per person (they expect travellers to be bringing back goods), so I got $150 off my 5% duty bill. I think paid him about $175 to 200 after the deduction. Yes you pay at the Customs desk there at the airport.

Now, I've heard of people skating thru claiming as if they brought a bass on their entire trip... I don't do that, I dont have that kind of luck.

When I placed my initial deposit, that was my wife's and my plan as well - to make a UK trip out of the pickup. Since then we have had one child, and probably will have another by the time the bass is finished. Amazing how much life can go by during the Wal order process! What was initially planned as a couples' trip to the UK may now be a full-fledged family vacation!

I’ve been very fortunate to have owned this bad boy for a good amount of time.
This bass, which I still call “Gmork”, was mine back in January 2019 bought from the original owner.

Unfortunately I’m not playing much at all as lots has changed in my life since purchasing and it’s the one bass I’ve held onto. This bass offers intrinsic value to my life, even though ownership is extrinsic. I owned a 1988 MK2 5 which lives in Switzerland that was my former favourite Wal which I had the pleasure of owning for 5 years. This one, won the battle in the end. It’s tough to think of parting with this one, but I’m always into trying new basses and my financial investment in instruments had dwindled dramatically. It’s a curse to have a need to try new stuff but I’ve learned a lot about instruments (repairs, construction, issues, etc). It’s been fun.

I’ve got a brand new custom Olinto 4J being built for me that is due for shipment any minute now. And I just decided to buy another instrument (not an Wal) over the past week as a bit distraction / fill the need for trying something new.

Anyway, hoping the Wal
Club is still happy and healthy.
Is Paul still holding new orders into the foreseeable future?

Just adding to this post, for anyone trying to or thinking of replicating my Wal 5’s finish, unfortunately it can’t be completely done by Wal.

The original finish looked like this:

In my opinion, not the nicest finished product and I think the update elevated this bass dramatically.

Unfortunately I don’t know who changed the finish to the body, a fellow club member suggested Wilkins. It definitely does look like his work.

So for those thinking of doing a transparent burst over Zebrano facings, I’d pass and go for the standard finish or clear gloss. If you really wanted transparent burst, I’d try another facing.
I’d be curious if Paul was keen on doing this build or if the previous owner pushed for it. If anything…it’s flat out cool today!

I actually like this finish. So this was the original finish from Paul and someone else refinished it into how it is now? I also like how it is now because you can see the grain much better.

The original finish is the solid transparent blue. Its current state is the way it’s shown on the nedcom site.

Balance is the biggest key.
My 91 Mk2 5 has a solid maple body, it was 11.7 lbs, and was rather headstock heavy. I put the new Schaller light tuners, and not only did it bring the weight 'down' to 11.0 lbs, it relieved the headstock wanting to dive and it stays angled upward without having to hold it up.

I am considering Schaller M4S light also for my Mk2.
The weight reduction seems to be from 33 to 44g per tuner, depending on the source (Schaller website, TB users...). For 5 tuners, that's about 200g / 0,44 lbs.
How did you manage a weight reduction of 0,7 lbs ? Did you change the bushings as well ?

bought 2 basses from these guys, great dealer. Both basses packed great and sent to me in the US. Shipping and customs is crazy expensive just to warn you guys. But at least you know that you’re getting it from a reputable dealer.
