I’ve got just one Wal but have been lucky enough to try some lovely basses. The Wal is my number one though, which is why it takes centre-stage in this (self-satisfied, sorry!) shot. Paul very kindly gave it the thorough once over at the start of 2023 (and sportingly posed for a photo). I couldn’t be happier with any instrument.
I’ll be taking some more photos of it soon and I’ll be aiming to capture the amazing, almost metallic glint (that I’m reliably informed is chatoyance). It’s an absolute beast though. Thanks to @Dyerseve14 for making it possible too!

Indeed, a happy 2024 to all! I have owned my zebrawood Mk2 for nearly 3 years now and every single time I take it out of the case I'm struck by the quality. It's an absolute tone monster, joy to play and an incredible work of art. And honestly I still cannot believe that I own it, my dream bass.
I haven't had a single ounce of GAS ever since I first got my hands on it. I honestly believe this Wal is my last bass I'll ever buy. So fitting too, since it was my very own custom order which I flew out to collect in person (and that was an adventure in itself as I was out and about at the start of the lockdowns).

Amazing basses, all three! Love that Ken Smith also. I recently acquired a six string Ken Smith Burner Artist and that is a great bass. It has way more lows than a Wal and the B is killer. It was very clear last rehearsal when I switched from the Smith back to my Wal mk1. I used bridge pick up only on both basses, but with the bass knob in the middle on the Smith it has much more lows than the Wal (filter knob on 5 or 8 or so, not pulled out). I love them both though.

The ergonomics and tones of the three differ markedly. The Fodera is very mellow and suits jazz perfectly. The Ken Smith has a very wide body and changes where I keep my right arm. The tone is lovely and clear. The Wal feels the most robust of the three and the sound is more what I hear in my head most of the time, which is a more direct, rocky tone with a bit of hair. Admittedly, the preamps in each are flexible and the strings differ, but I like each sounding like most would instinctively expect them to sound (noting that on this thread there is no consensus as to whether a Wal sounds like Mick Karn, Geddy Lee, Justin Chancellor and so on). No Wal but what I have in mind when I say that is this: The Wal neck is definitely the one I find easiest to deal with. It’s a bit thicker front to back, or at least feels it. I should measure it.

That birdseye Mk1 and the wenge Mk3 are both super tasty
Do you also notice the big difference between de Smith and the Wal in the lows when you switch between them? The Smith having much more (round) low end when pickup settings are the same.
