I wanted to share a recent documentation project that may be of interest to the Wal Bass Club.
I’ve published a detailed archival article on a July 1983 Wal Mk 1 (W2145) associated with Steven Severin (Siouxsie and the Banshees) from 1983–1984.
The article focuses on visual and historical verification and includes high-resolution photography, internal dating, and side-by-side comparisons with broadcast television appearances (Top of the Pops, Dec. 1983; The Tube, Oct. 1984), as well as use in the official “Dazzle” music video. The bass features non-standard fleur-de-lis fretboard inlays, which make visual identification unusually clear across sources.
For context, I’m not a player — I focus on documenting artist-used instruments and stage gear, with an emphasis on provenance and visual corroboration. This article was created to establish a public, citation-ready record for this specific instrument.
This piece is also the first in a series of long-form archival articles I’m producing for RockSubculture that focus on historically significant, artist-used guitars, stage gear, and related artifacts. The aim of the series is to memorialize verifiable documentation — high-resolution imagery, period references, and other details relevant to provenance and authenticity.

Oh nice!!! I've always wondered where this bass went. If you want, I can fill in some of the info in between Severin owning it and landing on consignment. I actually was pretty close in buying it from the last owner, but opted not to. Let me know and I can email you.
I am looking forward to recording in the studio soon with this newish to me fretless. It needs some work to be playable (bridge rattles on one string due to the floating piece and the jack was not secured so it "fell in"). I also changed out the tuners to the Hipshot HB6 (the originals are safe and sound).
Here she is. Shipping next week. 5yrs since I joined the waitlist. Can't wait.
