He used a Wal, as sadly, the great man is no longer with us. His solo record 'Titles' is worth checking out if you like his sound though. Fantastic bass tone and some very exotic sounds! A lot of his recorded output was apparently done with a Travis Bean fretless (and in later years, a Klein bass). He didn't use Wals as much as is commonly thought, though he undoubtedly had his own sound - hence why he has sown such confusion as to what he was using, and when!
Wanted to give you guys an update on the eBay 5er I was looking at (a few pages back) and after multiple messages back and forth with promises to send pics (as well as asking for my email twice) the seller never sent any - he even had the audacity to say he did lol. So buyer beware if he realists - he says its for his bandmate but looks to be a scam as he never could confirm any information on the bass other than what was in the listing.
With that said - and thank you TMB for your opinions - I started thinking of just biting the bullet and ordering a bass direct from Paul so I could get exactly what I wanted, a 4 string MKII with flamed maple facings and ebony fretboard.... when lo and behold I did a last google search for any used (even before the post a page or two back referencing it) and found exactly what I was looking for on walbassesnaturally!! The seller and I worked out a price and although its a bit more than I was in budget for originally its still going to be around a few thousand less than ordering new and I don't have to wait 19 months or so to get it! I'm beyond stoked and will post some pics when it arrives!

Yes good catch, the MKI - still want it though!! I lucked out with a Warmoth/Fender parts brazillian fretboard fretless that I love but would be sweet to have fretless Wal so the MKII wont get lonely
That 87 Fretless has also been listed on Basschat for a couple of months now. Might have to page back several pages to find it since their search feature sucks.
