I'd say that would be the fault of the two security employees acting outside of their job description...not sure how Wal Mart can be blamed for that one.

Would it not make more sense on the part of the store to let them go, surely letting someone get away with <$100 in goods is better than an employee getting hurt, you never know, the thief may have a knife or a gun on them, i wouldnt risk it.

Exactly. And I would think that this is how most stores handle such situations. Not that I'm disputing the OP's story, but I have to admit a healthy dose of skepticism in believing that any major store chain would encourage this sort of thing... I could be wrong for sure but.......

then again this is not the first such story I've heard. There was one down south.. Alabama maybe? where a guy and his two young kids were walking to the door after paying for some items. The man was asked to show his receipt he fumbled around in his pockets and when he couldn't find it, he apologized + tried to walk out the door and was physically pushed against the wall and held there face first, (this in front of his hysterical kids) while the security investigated. They discovered that the guy DID in fact pay for teh items by checking the particular cash register. He was then apologized to and let go..
I'll have to find the source on that one, but I would really think that it's either embellished or more urban legend than anything.

Perhaps my statement was too much of a blanket. In the death of the individual, I put significantly more blame on the two people who beat him to death than the store who hired them.

It's been over 10 years ago, but when I worked for walmart in highschool we were specifically instructed to chase/tackle/fight potential shoplifters by the store management. We were also denied breaks and proper pay through shady scheduling practices (ie: lying). Walmart was easily the most shady and greedy place I've ever worked.

this is obviously pointless. a capitalist will be a capitalist as long as they're allowed. just as slave owners were. there were very compelling arguments made for slavery by both southern and northern politicians, businessmen, land lords in the mid 1800s. and they swayed a lot of people with talk of improving conditions, caring for their slaves because they owned them and thus they were capital. wage slavery [what we have now] means that everyone must rent themselves. if you own something, you take care of it. if you rent it, you'll let it get frayed around the edges if not totally abused then discard it and replace it with another individual to be forced into the position of a cog in a machine.

Theft is probably more rampant than ever. If you bought something in a store, is it really that big a deal to have your receipt checked on the way out?

I hand them the receipt, they check it off. Not exactly a big deal in my book. Here's what I don't get...

if you buy lets say five items from a store and receipts aren't checked off, what is stopping you from handing that to someone who's entering the store who could then get the same items and head for the exits with the same receipt? That's how not complicated this problem is to me.

Another factor in stores like Walmart is that you have multiple places to pay for things. That's convenient. You don't necessarily have to pay at the main registers... which makes not signing off on a receipt even more problematic.

To me it's a simple solution to avoid a potential problem and I honestly don't get why people act like it's an invasion of your privacy. It's abig deal because...?

I always see the guy standing there, wanting to check my receipt, and I'd let him if he feels it necessary. Normally I just give them a nod, and they one back to me, and we go our seperate ways. I see other people stop by him and show him their receipts (he doesnt check them off though, just looks at the receipt, then in the cart/bag) but I just casually walk by them with my newly acquired goods. I wouldnt hesitate to stop if he were to attempt to check my receipt, but he just doesnt... maybe he can tell Im just a stand up guy...?

Next time I will beg them to check my receipt.

That's why he got hired. Walmart takes all of their profits and funnels them into a super-secret screening/training program whereby they, through a simple interview process that involves a Q&A session and ends with a game of Scrabble that has 3 extra Q's, are able to find the ideal candidates with the right skill set.

Once this elite group of people has been separated from the others (who, as Turner can tell you, end up in Returns), they are blindfolded and shipped out to Syria. While there, they are further screened and subdivided again. Anyone who shows proficiency in hand to hand combat becomes the tip of the spear of Loss Prevention. Those that exhibit any kind of mind powers are allowed to work the door, pretending to check receipts, but actually reading your mind and securing the kind of information that marketing needs to continue WalMart's unfair takeover of the planet.

You guys can whine all you want about the "personal property" you're being asked to show...I'll be busy working on the REAL problem.

the majority of popular movements have been moves to a civil society that bares little resemblance to the society we have right now. just as a system incorporating chattel slavery is different from a capitalist system of wage slavery and private, unaccountable tyrannies.

My beef is their low prices. They shouldn't be allowed to sell things so cheaply. It's ruining the economy. People still have enough money left over to eat. How are we going to eliminate overpopulation if people have enough money left to eat?

Getting around is the worst part. I had a Little Rascal on order but when they delivered it and I requested that it be hard-wired in so I could actually leave the stall, they laughed and took a duece.
