I have a 58 AVRI sunburst and absolutely love it. Got it used in great shape for $1150. It has a really large neck, but I had no problem getting used to it. I did have to put some locktite on the saddle screws to keep the saddles from gradually dropping down to the bridge plate over time. I'm guessing the original 58' had the same problem, but it is supposed to be a copy of the original after all...

I've really enjoyed this thread. (And ones similar to it.) It's easy to take for granted just how many P bass oriented choices we have, and it's brought into focus in discussions like this.
Squier, Classic Vibe, MIM Fenders, CIJ Fenders, MIA Fenders, AVRI, Custom Shop, Fender Design Experience.
And this doesn't even address P type basses by Lakland, Sadowsky, Lull, Nash, Warmoth, etc.
Ash, Alder, Exotic hardwoods, chambered bodies or solid. Active electronics or passive. Mass produced pickups or Boutique. Vintage style hardware or High Tech state-of-the-art. Nitro laquer or poly. Maple, Rosewood, Ebony or Padauk fretboard. Nickel or Stainless Steel frets. Black, White, Mint, Parchmant, Mother-of-toilet-seat, or Tort pickguards. You know what I think? I think this is a pretty good time to be in the market for a P bass.

(And if Fender ever decides to bring back the '51 P/ '68 Tele, I'll ask you, "Blonde, Sunburst or Black?")

I'm curious to know in what way the Carvins kill the Stingray. That's not something I've ever heard before, and I love and have owned both of them.

Something to do with the ash/maple combination and the vintage pickups...I'm currently playing an ash/ebony P bass with an Aguilar pickup that has a similarly clear and aggressive voicing

You can definitely go with the new Mia standard or even design your own, but if you want vintage, go with the real vintage. It will feel different, sound different, and of course it will look vintage. Yes, you can get a reissue, but there's nothing like having the real deal in your hands.
I have an '02 mia and an '82 walnut p bass special, and there's no comparison. just having the walnut p in my hands, you know it's a great bass. So if you want something under 2 grand, there should be some vintage basses that can be easily obtainable.
Here's my walnut. I just can't resist showing it off.
