I hadn't thought about it, but... jeez, I have a lot of War movies. And, a whole bunch of "kinda" war movies, too - like Dr. Strangelove, Guns At Batasi, and Apocalypse Now (which, amazing and good as it is, IMO isn't a War Movie - as in " the protagonists are fighting the War". It's Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness - with a little Lord Jim mixed in - set in Viet Nam, during a war...)

I watched the Pacific as I was hunkered down in a hooch in Afghanistan, so maybe it had a different effect on me. Also, on of my rugby teammates from high school was one of the stars - played Capt Haldane!

Agreed that American Sniper is a propaganda piece. Always good to understand other sides of the story. Gotta understand that Chris kyle's worldview was and is not unique amongst those who served there....

Sadly, Chris Kyle's worldview isn't exclusive to people who have not even been to the Middle East let alone served there (or even read a book about it...) For the record, I know a few people who did their rounds in Kandahar and not one of them said things as remotely awful as Kyle did (and this was in private conversation where it wouldn't have been documented, not print.) As I am sure you know since you served over there, just because you did a tour of duty doesn't make you a racist.

Akshilly...watching Enemy At The Gates is what got this thread started, and it's the very first movie mentioned.
Personally, I think it is one of the very best movies I've ever seen, and the five minutes built around the first meeting of the two protagonists are five of the best, most dramatic and compelling minutes of movie making I've ever watched!

These past few years I find myself completely fascinated with the dozens (no, hundreds!) of documentary footage found on YouTube, as told from all countries points of view of the 2ndWW ... Stalingrad was an especially epic turning point!

Kursk was pretty decisive battle as well.
