War movies... Your short list...

Great thread.

Watched this one for the first time the other night, so here's my short list:

While hardly a technical marvel, it was good for its time, and solid performances from the co-stars.

The point of that movie wasn't entirely the action, it was the characters and their interactions. Gable and Lancaster played really well opposite each other. In recent years we've lost character development so we have more time to blow sh** up. This often weakens the movie. I consider that to be half psychological drama, and one of the great WWII movies. The movie "The Enemy Below" is a submarine duel between Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens, and it's also quite good.

Right, movies like that center on character development and tension, and the male leads really delivered. The effects are secondary.

I will check out The Enemy Below as I'm a fan of those two actors as well.

As much as I've come to despise him as a person, yeah, he can make a movie. I find "Apocalypto" mesmerizing, watch it every time it's on basically, and yeah, I guess it's a war movie. "I am Jaguar Paw. This is my forest. And I am not afraid!"

Liked on both counts. I remember reading The Tin Drum in German (Die Blechtrommel). Not pleasant, but glad I did.
