The Wall - excellent movie, and it fits into the theme of this thread being part of the story did relate to WW2.

Robert Duvall is possibly the coolest ever in that movie. Standing on the beach, rounds coming in, everybody grabbing sand and he don't even flinch. He's taking care of business, and talking about surfing. Then he's flying through the jungle on the loud speaker, looking for his surfboard.
