Warmoth Gecko owner's club

now I play it for a while, probably until I start to see groves then ill sand it down re-raidus and epoxy it unless I realy love the sound without the epoxy, I would not have made it this smooth or used oil on it right before applying epoxy.
if I did the epoxy now id need to cut a new nut

Here is the finished product with the pickups. This bass sounds amazing. There are so many sounds I can get from this bass in passive alone. When active is on I have a wide variety of tones that are available.

question for tubby
I saw on the warmoth board that you tried a fretless neck on a few different bodys including a maple one and im wondering about the tonal results, id like to get a little more bite from my swampash/ weng/ebony fretless so im thinking of building a new maple body with a different pickup rout posibly closer to the bridge, do you think this will give me a brighter fretless tone than the swamp ash.
the swamp ash body with the MM rout will not go to waste it will go full music man style with an all maple fretted neck and a j-retro MM preamp

Love my Gecko. According to a great luthier I know, he says: "best kept secret".
I left mine RAW! I polished my stainless frets to 16,000 grit. I used Hipshot machines and bridge.
EMG Active DC and CS 40's with a BQC system running at 18volts. Took a bit for me to learn a 35 scale
as my muscle memory has been for a 34" scale. The Body is Black Korina with a
Wenges/purple heart neck with Pau Ferro fingerboard with Graphite rods. I decided to remove the installed Graphtech nut and I made my own nut from a blank. I've also changed the stock EMG Knobs for Chrome Metal with the rubber "O" ring. This is a perfect balanced bass. I plan on making a sister Fretless. :) Invalid Link Removed

Very nice! I think that's the first time I have seen a Gecko bass with cloverleaf tuners. Interesting. Welcome to the club!

Hey guys,

I'm debating placing an order for a Gecko 6 string in about two months. I'm just curious how the neck profile is? For what it's worth, I like Ibanez SR 6 stringers, but don't mind the rounder radius... If it proves to be too round, I can flatten it a bit (I'm actually planning on making this a mutliscale bass, so I will order a fretless, and will cut in the fanned frets, which will include a zero fret). I know I can get 16.5mm string spacing on it so the spacing would be the same, but I'm not sure how bulky the neck is. Is there any basses out there that someone can compare it to for me?

Also, I'll likely get a wenge neck with an ebony fingerboard, and will put on Hipshot ultralite tuners on it. Can anyone recommend a good body wood that's light in weight, has a good appealing grain (don't want a top laminate), aids in an articulate/snappy tone, and will balance well with the neck?

Thanks!

I havn't stuck my nose in the recent specs but youll find the board a 12" or 14" radius I believe. About the back profile you have to remember all Geckos are asymmetrical. Think of it as a lopsided D where its thicker at the low strings and is progressively slimmer as it transitions to the high strings.

Mahogony, Alder and a few others may be light... For this you may want to think about using Walnut. It would be a subtle contrast to the wenge/ebony.

Yeah, I read about the asymmetrical neck on the website. I've never played a neck like that before so I don't know how it will feel. But if anything, I'm sure it will be on the thicker side, so I can always sand it down a bit if necessary.

Hmm, hadn't thought about Walnut, it is a bit heavier though no? I know it looks good, and will probably be good tone wise, but I don't want the bass to be too heavy... I'd like it to be around or under 10lbs if possible, though I do plan on doing some recontouring of the horns to make the higher frets more accessible, and will likely make similar changes to the upper horn so it looks symmetrical, which I guess would reduce the weight as well.

Anyone made a walnut body Gecko 6 with a wenge neck and ebony fingerboard, who knows what their bass weighs? That would help a lot.

If I had a scale I'd weigh my 5 to give you an idea. Sorry no scale.
It's totally a different neck profile than most. You may like it. Just be careful and don't take too much off. They to come loaded with steel rods so you don't want to expose them in the process.

Now I know your goal is no top lamenent... Since it sounds like your not scared away by modding... You could chamber it and cap it with a veneer if you don't like the weight.

Hmm... Very good points. Thank you

Question for all you Gecko owners.

Has anyone ever done 18mm spacing on the "Gecko Medium" ?

I know that the 18mm are for the small (according to the folks at Warmoth)
Share the skinny...
Cheers

Just measured my medium and it's at 19mm. Now I could cheat it with the hipshot A to 18mm but then the fret board would be a little wide at the heal for my liking.
I would have chosen a small if it was an option when I ordered this one.

I've left mine all RAW!!!!!!!!
Wenge Purple Heart Neck with Pau Ferro fret board
Black Korina Body

IS THAT A 1212/6/1 Fearful? If so, I'm thinking that 35" scale gecko sounds great......
