Its really darn close, but the bubinga has a slight red hue that doesn't show up on the pictures. Neck has no finish at all and will probably stay that way. I really like how all the woods kinda go together (bubinga neck, pau ferro fretboard, mahogany body), I was extremely worried they'd be mismatched but took the chance anyway...

Didn't have the right sized drill bit to do the tuners yet, so its frustratingly close, but not there... ;)

Edit:

Can I get a number? :) Its finally done!

Plays as well as I hoped it would, sounds exactly like I want.

Nice! Very clean. I like the look of a non-traditional shape that is typically an out-front visual (i.e. "broken mirror" tops) presented in an understated natural finish. It's a nice departure and the headstock compliments the body shape well.

I just ordered another Warmoth a couple of weeks ago and should get the wood in about a month. I'm feeling the bling so it'll be bit louder...I am psyched. Pictures will follow around June.:D

Wow, I really like how the headstock came out on that. Nice work.

I appreciate the compliments. It was a fun project.

I was going to do the Ibanez shape on the headstock but the tuner holes are drilled a bit closer than they are on an Ibanez and I couldn't make that shape work. So........I kept drawing on the wood and erasing until I came up with that shape :) Overall, between the point on the bottom of the body and the long headstock, it stands about 2 inches taller than any of my other basses!!

For my next project, I'd like to build a Tele style bass with a reversed headstock AND reversed body. Dusty Hill has a few basses like that and I think they look really cool.

I've been wanting to do a Deluxe 5 J with a 5-in-line Tele headstock and some Fat Stacks for a while, but their standard bridge spacing is like 17.5mm which is too narrow both for my preference and the pickups i want to use. Can the D5J accomodate a wider string spacing if i just have them drill for the bridge ground?

Warmoth neck finished with tru-oil. Second warmoth with vintage sized frets, little tiny things that are great for low tight action. Warmoth nitro-tort pickguard and Rio Grande vintage pickups.

The body is maybe a mightymite i refinished with Duplicolor van lacquerand Minwax nitro. This baby sings.

And my crappy logo install. The light caught it wrong but I do need to reset it.

You could go wider. 18mm shouldn't be much of a problem. If you want to go 19mm, realize you run the risk of the strings too close to the edge of the neck in the upper register.

Thanks for the info my friend. I rarely play that high up the neck but I'll keep the warning about the string falloff in mind. Now to convince the wife... lol

I don't have one, but I sure as hell wish I did. I even know exactly how I'd get it (except for a few "major" things like brand/model of pickups):
* Chambered J Bass alder body, nitro Burgundy Mist finish
* Vintage tint clear gloss maple neck, rosewood fretboard, vintage-size frets
* P/J pickup configuration, with a stacked knob for P vol/tone, with just a vol for the J (no master tone)
* Gotoh 201 bridge

I think I'd be set for life with that.
