Even in this pic you can see dark areas up by the belly cut. Not as dark as the black bass but the same kind of thing.
I'm going to suggest a new scenario. The finish is fine. The particular piece of wood is very dark.
Look at this pic of Poplar. Some of it is nice and white while parts are very dark. If you painted this blue it would be part blue and part black when it's done.
I suspect the bass here has very dark wood except that one blue area on back.
