Was my pawn shop impulse purchase worthwhile?

Postal scale, and I swear it weighs in at 5lbs 14ozs. I couldn't believe it either. My P-Lyte Deluxe weighs just a hair under 7lbs on the same scale. In any case, I will weigh it on another scale when I get a chance, just to double-check it.

Jump on your bathroom scale with the bass. Record the weight

Jump on the same scale without the bass.

Subtract the second number from the first. Pretty much a foolproof way to weigh your bass.

Good purchase. They were kind of pricey in their day. I played one in a store and was very impressed, however, it was a little bright compared to a Fender/Squier Jazz. I am sure that paired with a proper amp, you could tweak controls to get the growl. Nice deal.

Please do, because that would be truly amazing. You know my time here at TB I've never seen a bass below 7 lb let alone significantly under 6, and those are for four string basses. The type of wood used in your bases is denser and generally heavier plus it's a 5-string so it's a bigger body and a bigger neck along with more Hardware and bigger pickups. Maybe the scale is not calibrated correctly. And if it truly is, never ever sell it|
Postal scale was WAY off! Just put it on a calibrated digital scale and it weighs 7lbs 12ozs. It still feels a hell of a lot lighter than it looks to me!

I got one of these years ago still have it too. It’s a nice 5 string for the price, I think it was like $450 new? Mine is that strange grey/green not wood body though. That one looks super cool! I didn’t know they made any like that. Congrats on your purchase! it’s worth 200 all day long. Enjoy it

This calls for a preemptive strike. Conspicuously post one of your oher basses on fleabay and craigslist, the most expensive one. Don't take any of the offers, but the act might stop her from an expensive outing.

A word of advice......
Get a generic rectangular case that fits 99% of basses (Alembics excluded) and a small temperature controlled storage space.
Leave the house with a bass in said case drop it in its actual fitted case at the storage site, put newly aquired bass in generic case and return home at the end of the day.
Wife sees same case leave and come back, no sweat.

If she does get wise remind her it's still just ONE case and your stuff isn't taking up any more household space than before (as you point to her ever expanding Isle of Shoes in the closet. :smug:
So, you’ve been at this for a while? I feel like I’m just peering over the edge of an abyss, and it’s dark, but think I hear something calling my name...

I found this Ibanez a couple of hours ago in a pawn shop near my house (pics below). I didn’t need it, as I just started learning to play a few weeks ago, already have a couple of 4-strings, and was not planning to play 5-string, but... it felt good and has a pretty neck that’s very straight with just a whisper of relief, the frets are great, action is surprisingly low with no buzzing, etc. It was priced at $400, but just for the hell of it, I put $200 in cash on the counter and told the owner that was all it was worth to me, and he shook my hand and said “Enjoy it in good health!” Did I buy something worthwhile? I hope so, because walking into the house with the third bass I bought in four weeks definitely seems to have caught my wife’s attention!
EDIT: I just weighed this bass and I am surprised to say that it is well under 6lbs! That is significantly less than my P-Lyte Deluxe.
CORRECTION: Postal scale was WAY off! Just put it on a calibrated digital scale and it weighs 7lbs 12ozs. Still feels pretty light to me!

An absolute steal @$200. Way to go!!!

Getting the sense that I have a lot to learn from the TB crowd!

A good one is always - "I bought it at a great price, I can always sell it for twice the price".....in your case, probably the truth. Once you bring it up as an investment opportunity with a higher yield return, you could come out a hero. Only have to do this once, sell the bass for twice the price, reinvest $200 and give her the additional $200 for her shoe purchases then you've got carte blanche for life. Nah....keep this bass, save that for the next one.
