Was my pawn shop impulse purchase worthwhile?

I had a number of Ibanez Ergodyne basses but the luthite ones.
EDA900, EDA905, EDB400, EDB500, EDB600, EDC700.
They made EDB with wood bodies, later on in the run of the series - I haven't seen many of these around or else I would have bought one. I don't believe any of the wooden ones were painted, luthite ones had to be also luthite ones have contoured bodies.

Here's a picture of two of the ones I used to own, the EDB600 and the EDA900.
They're great sounding basses, good score op for $200.

I found this Ibanez a couple of hours ago in a pawn shop near my house (pics below). I didn’t need it, as I just started learning to play a few weeks ago, already have a couple of 4-strings, and was not planning to play 5-string, but... it felt good and has a pretty neck that’s very straight with just a whisper of relief, the frets are great, action is surprisingly low with no buzzing, etc. It was priced at $400, but just for the hell of it, I put $200 in cash on the counter and told the owner that was all it was worth to me, and he shook my hand and said “Enjoy it in good health!” Did I buy something worthwhile? I hope so, because walking into the house with the third bass I bought in four weeks definitely seems to have caught my wife’s attention!
EDIT: I just weighed this bass and I am surprised to say that it is well under 6lbs! That is significantly less than my P-Lyte Deluxe.

I would have.........my worst...6 used guitars in 7 weeks, still have them all.

By the way, I'm not sure how you figured out its weight, but I would be willing to bet that it is definitely over 6 lb. There is no way a 5-string bass with that wood could be any less than 8 and probably more.

After I have been slapping a bass for awhile, I notice the fingernails on my right hand start to make little marks in that area. Over time they accumulate to bigger more noticeable marks, and eventually the finish begins to wear. It's from the right hand fingers not in the act of popping strings.

Well, that's my guess anyway. I could be wrong.
FWIW, the pawn shop owner said the bass had been hanging on his wall for 2 years and he thought the reason no one paid any attention to it it was that finish wear.

Well, it matches the ashtray!

The problem for me is not that my wife will get mad, it's that she is likely to counter with some truly vicious shoe shopping!

A word of advice......
Get a generic rectangular case that fits 99% of basses (Alembics excluded) and a small temperature controlled storage space.
Leave the house with a bass in said case drop it in its actual fitted case at the storage site, put newly aquired bass in generic case and return home at the end of the day.
Wife sees same case leave and come back, no sweat.

If she does get wise remind her it's still just ONE case and your stuff isn't taking up any more household space than before (as you point to her ever expanding Isle of Shoes in the closet. :smug:

Postal scale, and I swear it weighs in at 5lbs 14ozs. I couldn't believe it either. My P-Lyte Deluxe weighs just a hair under 7lbs on the same scale. In any case, I will weigh it on another scale when I get a chance, just to double-check it.

This one just smells like walnut and sweat!
That'll buff out!

Welcome to the amazing world of Ibanez TB'er!

I switched to Ibanez in the early 80's and have never looked back. I love them because they are light, easy to take care of, and are hot rods right out of the box! I especially love the natural finish like you have. Enjoy it, you truly fell into an excellent deal!

As far as the smell goes, get a can of spray Lemon Pledge and some rags. Generously spray down the rag with Pledge and start rubbing down the bass. I've found that always leaves your bass smelling fresh and feeling clean. Nice way to open a case to a fresh bass!

Congrats, and again, welcome to the Ibanez world!

P.S. I'm jealous that the bass is SO LIGHT for a five string!

Please do, because that would be truly amazing. You know my time here at TB I've never seen a bass below 7 lb let alone significantly under 6, and those are for four string basses. The type of wood used in your bases is denser and generally heavier plus it's a 5-string so it's a bigger body and a bigger neck along with more Hardware and bigger pickups. Maybe the scale is not calibrated correctly. And if it truly is, never ever sell it|
