Allison Kraus (& Union Station) was a name I'd heard plenty of times but never really heard or paid attention to. So with my three year old on the couch next to me, I went youtubing. I was impressed, but he's now a huge fan. Oh boy. His two favorite instruments are bass and drums... bluegrass might not be your thing kiddo.
James Brown might be the single strictest and tightest act ever...
I don't have a clue how to measure whether one band is tighter than another, so this thread seems like it ends up being about which band I like best.
So - not my favorite band, but I was impressed with how tight Chicago was when they played Knoxville, TN, USA about a year or so ago.

Of all time...only history will tell, though I have to say The Funk Brothers would certainly be up there as they were "the" band on so many songs for so many different singing stars laying it down and cranking out timeless grooves while standing in the shadow of greatness.
Pretty much any grouping that ever involved Chick Corea. "Slop" runs screaming when he sits behind the ivories.
Everybody must get stoned - no matter how much you may like the song - is not tight. Objective measures may be difficult, but I think most people have a clue what the OP is talking about.
Haha! So true! A lot of the examples given (at least the videos) don't seem so tight to me. Either the tempos are fluctuating or the band isn't entirely in sync.
I guess I'd define tight as when a band locks perfectly in time and structure, and the composition and arrangement allows each player to be distinctly heard. Plus, there are clear elements within the song where each player syncs perfectly with the other AND has opportunities to stand out within the song and the mix.
So... to me it probably is a combination of technique, skill, composition, confidence, showmanship, recording mix, teamwork, and sheer love for each other and the art.

My friend Paul & I would hitch hike to see Bonnie Raitt play at Frivilous Sal's Last Chance Saloon in Poughkeepsie.
What a great guy... sweet and unassuming...and I was 18, and on my heels over how F&&&&&g amazing he was!!!
He was the bassist I wanted to grow up to be.
He had the hair, too!
Bonnie Raitt's band was as tight as any band I'd ever heard up till then...
Then came Horslips...
A bar band like no other.
...Irish, too!

There is a huge difference between 4 on the floor rock and more sophisticated rhythms.
