Washington Redskins name

IMHO unless your fully Native American I don't think it's your place to say if the names offensive or not.

Absolutely

I watched a documentary on the Native lady who has been leading the charge for all of these name changes....the Redskins is the worst out of the bunch; the original owner was an avowed racist, and he came up with the name "Redskins" for the sole purpose of making fun of Natives. He thought the name was funny. Only reason their name hasn't been changed yet is because they have the best lawyers

Do you remember the name by chance?

Change the mascot to a potato.

I heard Limbaugh suggest that the other day also.

Sioux is the actual name of a Native tribe

Thanks. I know who the Sioux are. That still doesn't answer the question. It was in response to this:

I'm sitting here drinking Sioux City Sarsaparilla. obviously racist.

Is it the same?

From where I sit, 'Seminoles' or 'Warriors' don't appear racist or derogatory. 'Redskins' is.

As in ANY attempt at communication you need to get to the root of what is trying to be said. If we examine the evidence

Lions
Bears
Bengals (tigers)
Eagles
etc etc

Common ground? ( aside from being animals if you please in this brief example )

Things admired for their strength, fierceness and prowess.

Thus Redskins = acknowledged bad assery on a contested field. Oh gee, that is what football teams are trying to portray... :rollno:

If a negative can somehow be derived from that, the person can also find insult from a salt shaker.

PC people are the bane of civilization. The sooner we have a hunting season for them the sooner we can go back to laughing at/WITH each other as we find commonality in our diversity and foibles.

Except that in real life, "Redskins" was chosen because it is a funny name to call Natives.

I tend to agree with you as far as other team names like the Chiefs, Braves and the like

But its not a PC dogooder, its a Native American lady who objects to both the name and the reason it was named in the first place. Which apparently was far removed from acknowledged strength on the battlefield.

Hunting season on people you don't agree with. Sounds like PC people behavior to me.

Oh & here's a doozy: in the CFL, Ottawa's new team has called themselves.....wait for it.....the "Redblacks". You know, cuz their uniforms are red & black.

The list of bad assery goes on & on.

Funky, the original owner, the avowed racist, came up with the team name "Redskins" because he thought it was funny.

I'm learning a new lesson here. As a mostly Caucasian man, I can only point out what I feel is racism towards Caucasians. So much for that ability to empathize that I thought was a good trait.

I'm not doing this today. That is not what I said, and you know it. Cease with the silliness

I see a lot of NHL there.. no NFL. CFL doesn't count... different marketing dept. Canada has a different mindset with naming conventions. So, really, this post was a lovely list of not even applicable. Excellent work DH.
