It's always hard to critique or categorize an Opeth album. All I know is that I'm loving it. Right now, The Lotus Eater and Burden are my favorite songs on the album, but as with every Opeth album, that is subject to change after repeated listens. The cover of Robin Trower's "The Bridge of Sighs" on the special edition is amazing by the way. That and the the song sung in Swedish (Den Standiga Resan) are worth the extra money imo. I still need to listen to Derelict Herds a few more times to form a solid opinion.

On another note: Anyone else think Fredrik Akesson is a little to "shreddy"? Maybe Peter didn't have his chops, but his solos are more memorable.

Martin Axenrot on the other hand: a perfect fit. It doesn't even feel like Martin Lopez is gone.

Oh, and turn up Mendez's bass. He is frequently inaudible in the mix.

axenrot does an awsome job, but im not surprised, as i believe he has toured with them before. I do preffer peter to fredrik alot, but i dont think its ruined opeth.

It took me a few listens to realize i love coil.

i think heir apparent might be the best song (at the moment)

oh and also: the clarinets on this album, are FRIGGEN AMAZING.

I'm getting teh album tomorrow and I can't wait. I'm itching to hear it. Opeth is my favorite band, and Martin Mendez is my fav bassist. His lines are all about the rythm, but he still knows when to pull out the ******** riffing. I hope that the rythm section is still solid without Lopez. Mendez and Lopez were probably one of the tightest rythm sections around in modern music (and ESPECIALLY metal).

I think the magic of the rthym section lies in the fact that there need to be 2 Martin's in the band at all times ;)

As for the new members: I love most of Axenrot's drumming, with the exception of Porcelain Heart (but that might be due to just not liking the song at all). And I don't like any of Akesson's solos. Sure he's a good shredder, but none of it sounds as though it fits the music.

While I don't like Porcelain Heart, has anyone else heard Mellotron Heart? Sounds awesome.

why would you want a cookie cutter opeth?? that is not at all what they are about... the new album is amazing as are all their other albums... and they do sound a little different because there is new blood in the mix... and their first album with blastbeats too...

I love the album... but at this point it's #3 behind Blackwater Park and GR. It might even be #4 behind Damnation. It's growing on me though. I don't think anything can ever replace the "Holy F*** who are these guys" feeling when I first heard Blackwater Park. (I only discovered Opeth a few months ago.)

I disagree on the "you won't miss Lopez" part.. I miss him. Axe is great, technically as good as Lopez, but I prefer the drum parts Lopez wrote on past albums.

I saw Opeth live a few weeks ago. Awesome show. They didn't play anything off Watershed as it hadn't been released in Canada yet.. but they promised they would when they come back in September.

I was surprised at the show that I was close to the oldest there. I'm 37, there were 2-3 50ish guys there.. good to see. I did note that most of us older folks appeared to be there by ourselves. I could not find ANYONE who wanted to go with me.. but I HAD to go.

I'm not going to repeat what has already been said (I love the album) but I wanted to just mention that there are few places where Mendez has some killer bass lines. The first that comes to mind is the one in Lotus Eater under the carnival keyboards... the way the drums and bass lock in there is something to awe at. :D Puts a smile on my face everytime :) The tone of his Marcus Miller is killer there too, really burpy and it cuts through the mix.

I agree completely. I haven't listened with headphones yet, but I did notice while driving that bass part under the "Ghosts and Goblins" section. His tone is fantastic there. Are there any other parts in particular that stand to you guys?
