So are we talking only new?? Ebay?? The better I get after my 30 years of playing, the more I shy away from "Major" Brands. I prefer the much better made Hand crafted basses. To me, having a one off, Custom made bass is a big draw for me.

With the dollar doing so poorly against the Euro these days, you should be able to get a great bass for a song. Just forget the local dealers and buy online, through a TBer or elsewhere

Even with a 29% import tax, the Euro is worth 1.6 USD. Something does not make sense with the price. A bass costing $1000 USD would cost 625 Euros add 29% import tax, you are at 806.25 Euros. Add a few Euros for Transatlantic shipping and maybe you are at 900 +/- Euros.
Am I missing something?
American made instruments should be very attractive to our pals across the pond, price wise?

You are missing the fact that the s&h value gets added to the price and then the 29% import tax is added. Then you add some more custom related fees (brokerage fees and handling fees at the airport too). And you miss the pre-sale chance to examine the EXACT instrument you are buying

I was looking at some basses in a store yesterday (im a bass newbie) and all the basses seemed EXTREMELY expensive...

a regular Fender JazzBass 2000$

That's about what we pay out here in Australia. More for Musicmans. I'd have bought one but for the price. And yes the prices are ridiculous. Fancy 2.5k for a few lumps of wood. :scowl:

Stringrays are bloody expensive in the uk. easily spend £1000 -1500 on a stingray V fenders arnt as bad
