Thanks! If it ends up at least reasonably functional, there'll be video clips.I'm really interested to hear what it sounds like!

Thanks! I think I've found the right way to deal with this road hump: I'm not disheartened, I feel empowered by what I've achieved already, and I'm eager to push on.Iteration is normal when making the first of anything, rather than following a previously refined plan.
I haven't yet.How did you end up tensioning the leather?
As a temporary measure, I have supported the free end of the tongue. Further experimenting lies ahead.Your spring system is very clever! I wonder if an extra couple of laminations would strengthen it in a controlled manner like a bow limb.

I’d be tempted to add a reinforcement on edge, turning the cross section of the spring beam into a T. That will add a lot of stiffness with little weight. Then if it’s too stiff you can easily shave the narrow edge of the reinforcement to fine-tune it.As a temporary measure, I have supported the free end of the tongue. Further experimenting lies ahead.
Thank you! I'm thinking that my next project will be much more conventional. You know, a solid body, strap buttons, magnetic pickups, the works. This looks great. I can only imagine the difficulty in inventing and building an imaginary instrument from scratch, compared to just building a bass, when all the hard thinking has been done for you many times over

Well, it turns out all that inventing and problem-solving has taken its toll. When i strung the bass up for the first time, and found out how many things need to be changed or improved, I suddenly felt exhausted and needed to take a break from it. Since I can't stop myself from walking into the workshop all the time, I ended up putting the bass in another room so I didn't have to see it.watching your inventive side come into play solving some increasingly complex issues
A few days on, and I'm having some time off work. Then something entirely else intervened: I went bouldering (my new favourite sport), had a bad fall and sprained my ankle. So now I'm sitting at home, with my leg up, and an improvised ice pack. The limited time I can stand on my feet is spent on elementary household stuff and not on bass building.
How many Football(US) and Football(the rest of the world) builds do you think there might be?Hey ya'll, do you think this might work as a Build Off theme?
"Build a bass themed after your favourite sport"
It would nicely counterbalance the Nerd theme which is of a more intellectual nature.
How 'bout it?
