I must be doing it all wrong. No wonder I always get kicked out of the band after 2 or 3 rehearsals!
Could somebody make a summary?? I'm starting too get confused....
Let's see...
Some guy thought he would be witty and post about how under-appreciated he was as a bassist by his fellow musicians. To help himself feel better, he was hoping there were other angst-ridden players to help assuage him of his loneliness.
And then there was Metallica.
And then there was a happy goat...
...but no one could figure out what that had to with anything.
And then it was Happy Towel Day
Does it make sense now?
I'm more concerned with the never ending task of getting better than with how the public perceives bassists.

It does!! Thanks! I thought I was the only one that wasn't able to figure out what the happy goat meant... I almost started to panic...
To me, my role in the band is support. Driving support to everyone, guitarists, keyboards, drummers, percussionists, singers... Everyone. I also feel that while I am a supporting person, I am one of the most valuable. One of the drummers or guitarists o vocals can drop out and not be missed. I can't do that! I have to be always on.. I make a mistake and everyone knows. They screw up, it gets passed by..
under appreciated= sewage workers, nurses, care workers, paramedics, club bouncers (good ones), police officers SOUNDMEN.
Being a bassist doesn't have to be a job in the shadows. People such as Paul McCartney and Jack Bruce have proved that. I'd like to have their talent, but all you can do is develop what you have and hope that that will be enough.
i know the pain too of being yelled at for over-playing.
no offense meant, but the funniest posts on here are the ones that are seriously trying to reassure the git that started this thread.

I remember a story Bruce Dickinson (singer, Iron Maiden) told of Steve Harris (bassist, Iron Maiden). Apparently Steve loved to run center stage and put his foot on Bruce's monitors and play to the crowd, a lot! So before one concert, Bruce told the roadies to move his monitors to the sides of the stage, leaving center stage clear. Right before the show started, Steve had the monitors moved back, and of course, rode them half the show. I think the issue was finally settled when they decided to make multi-level stages for the band, so Bruce would just climb above Steve and do his lead-singer thing while Steve pointed his bass at the crowd and did his 'dub---dubby-dub---dubby-dub--dubby-dub', etc...
Point is, if you want to be the frontman on bass; start your own band, write most of the songs, guide the band like a captain does his own ship, and ride your singer's stage monitors half the show, like Steve did (does). Otherwise, put on your big boy underwear, check your ego at the stage entrance, link the drums to the guitar, and enjoy being an integral part of the show.
Point is, if you want to be the frontman on bass; start your own band, write most of the songs, guide the band like a captain does his own ship, and ride your singer's stage monitors half the show, like Steve did (does).
