If you won't promote your band (brand?), then who will? I think it's perfectly fine to wear your own swag.

The majority think it's lame. If this were an election it would be a landslide.
As others have said it comes off narcissistic at worst, cheesy at best.
I remember visiting a friend of my wife's a few years ago. She lived by herself in an apartment and she had solo pictures of herself all over the walls throughout her place. Like not even pictures with friends or family, just of herself. It was weird. Wearing your own bands shirt on stage at your own gig gives off that same vibe.
That said I don't care what anyone else does. OP asked for an opinion and I gave it.
And hell being lame isn't the worst thing in the world. I tell lame dad jokes all the time and people give me crap for it. I've also been known to wear Crocs to the grocery store.

Okay, I think that's more than a little more odd than what we are talking about.
But would this be analogous to wearing one of those family reunion shirts (of your own family of course) ? I think those are a little strange. I mean I can understand promoting your band, but promoting your family? As if people will see you all in these tshirts and then people will want to marry into it so they can get one, too?
On the opposite end one thing I do like is when local bands wear other local band shirts at gigs, it comes off very supportive.
Even more so when I see a famous band wearing shirts of lesser known bands on stage. That is cool as hell.

Never done it at a gig. But wear them everywhere else all the time. Not opposed to it. See we does it. So why can't we?
No way! If you are a mega huge legendary band, you can pull it off, otherwise, no deal. Even if current big bands like the foo fighters, if they were to wear their own shirts, it would rub me the wrong way. You're on stage, introduce your band by name, and let the music do the talking.

Kathy.......One VERY effective way of getting folks to remember who they just saw and heard is by having a BIG Banner with your Logo on it. A 10' x 6' Banner is relatively inexpensive and the audience is Forced to stare at it through your entire performance. As everyone with a phone is taking the band's pic...there's the banner long after they would have forgotten who you are. Having a Tee Shirt or any other Merch, CD's, Mugs, etc., with the same Logo on it, CLEARLY visible, generates two outcomes.
#1. The Banner is the first thing to be placed and the last thing to be taken down so people who see you are unable to forget who they saw. It takes about 60 seconds to hang a banner. (Exception) If you suck, however, don't put up a banner....and Change the name of your band EVERY week....TWICE a week if you REALLY Suck.
#2. Product / Logo PLACEMENT is HUGE in Marketing. Television does it all the time. You see a Can of Coke on a table for a split second....and 5 minutes later you're heading for the fridge.....having no idea that the can you saw, and the can that Coke paid HUGE dollars to have on that table, actually planted the "Seed for Need".
"Madam Secretary" wore a Peter Frampton "Nightshirt" in several Episodes. Sales of Frampton "stuff" exploded the next day.....Was that one a "Plant"? I'm fairly certain it wasn't cuz Peter is as Straight a Shooter as has ever lived....just Great Taste on Tea's part. ..... but it generated instant interest.
Many BIG Keyboard players cover the Logos on their Keyboard so they're not giving away free advertising. Many HUGE Marshall Stacks lined up across a stage are just empty Fakes.....but they make a lasting impression. Marketing is something that most bands are terrible at.....but good management saves the day for them.

I don't have a problem with it.... in my old band the singer got some shirts made up and we all wore them from time to time - she got them made up for a corporate function we were doing and we gave them out as part of the prize giving at the function and they went down a treat.
Why would you? Are you promoting yourself to people who are already watching you play?
Wear whatever you want, but it seems like childish narcissism to me.
