Wearing a mask, yes or no.

City of Birmingham just made masks mandatory. Outside your home or outside your conveyance. Not required if you are exercising (and observing distancing) outdoors but relaxing in the park, stuff like that, yep. Does not need to be any particular anything except cover mouth and nose. It’s to keep you from blowing covid clouds, not protect you from breathing in the virus. Given that breathing it in only becomes a concern if you are in constant close quarters with the virus, the rest of us can work that backward without the need for better filters.
 
Yes, it does. But, if there'a no other Guy (pants or not), who's just waiting to pee on me; can I walk around naked? Or do I need to wear pants, just 'cause somebody thinks I should? :eyebrow::eyebrow:
I would think that common sense tells you what you need to do. Is there a reasonable chance you might encounter another person? Then wear it. Are you going to a deserted place where you will not encounter another person, even in passing? Then maybe not. As has been said repeatedly, the masks we wear are to protect other people from ourselves if we are asymptomatic carriers. That's a matter of personal responsibility and personal responsibility is usually a big deal to a lot of people, so I am not sure why it's suddenly not when it comes to wearing a mask to protect our friends and others in the community. I think people just like to complain.

Asian countries where masks are common certainly have done much better, on average. While there are other factors involved, I don't think that's a coincidence.

I'm agreeing with you.
In fact I had to go outside and settle my breathing down after I ran the scenarios for that team.

Sick part is that I know there are a lot of teams working for brands trying to write new demand models for products.

I get why my lead Dev has PTSD dealing with consumer packaged goods now.

We never focus on the human cost, rather who's that largest metro area to sell stuff.

Adjust ERP accordingly.

I took my kids on a walk in town with some family friends on Monday. My poor boys are so young, they haven’t seen or really talked to kids their own age in over six weeks. Everyone kept their distance pretty well, but nobody could really keep the masks on the kids. I didn’t even wear one because we were out on an empty residential street talking to people 8-10 feet away who have been on constant lockdown for over a month.

Did it feel incredibly risky? Yes and no. It wasn’t ideal, but my boys are six and eight and their mental health needed a boost. The kids kicked a soccer ball to each other across the street for a few blocks and then we headed home.

As far as entering an enclosed public space like a store? My wife and I suit up big time. We have each gone to the store twice since the lockdown.

Fair enough.

You have no idea how many comments I see from people online lately that are absolutely serious in their opposition to this minor inconvenience because they feel like they have a right to do whatever they want, even when it includes putting others at risk.

Your comment was in no way clear as sarcasm. Usually when I post sarcasm in a deadpan voice here or elsewhere, I'll indicate it with a <sarcasm> </sarcasm> tag at beginning and end because otherwise people don't realize I'm not being serious.
 
For my day job, I'm an industrial hygienist. They think the virus can be spread by just exhaled breath and the size of the particles is less than 100 nm. A cloth mask won't be effective, nor will a surgical mask. N95 respirators don't fit everyone and they are not completely effective. Some brands are much better than others because they fit better. If you really feel you need to protect yourself going to the grocery store etc., a negative pressure respirator with a HEPA filter will work as long as it fits. Yet it doesn't filter the exhaled air. I think they are recommending cloth masks because it is better than nothing and it does reduce the amount of airborne contamination exposure. But wearing them out on the street in open air seems a little much.

My understanding is that the smallest particles in air never really get to you because of microcurrents in the air as we move that keep those particles from getting close to us. Edit: I'm trying to find the source for this but the gist is that it's aerodynamically difficult for very light particles to actually reach us because of the way air flows around the body, and the farther away we stay from others the less likely it is that our breathing in will breach that aerodynamic cushion.

It's the larger droplets that people exhale and spew when they speak, cough or sneeze that create the greatest danger because those heavier droplets are more likely to reach others through the air, or they will land on floors and surfaces that others will touch. So the effectiveness of the masks rests on the idea that they prevent droplets from moving beyond the face of an infected person, not so much that they prevent one from breathing in something that might be hanging in the air, and that is why it is repeatedly said that the masks are worn to protect others, not the wearer. But yes, the cloth mask does not prevent as much spread as an n-95 or a surgical procedure mask.

I would be interested in seeing your reference on the microenvironment. If we look at a common exposure to welding fumes (which are mostly ultrafines) they are very successful at getting into the workers lungs.

I think all particle sizes contribute to the risk. Remember that people are exposing others who do not even have symptoms so they are not coughing or sneezing. The larger particles from sneezing, coughing, and even possibly talking are actually more likely to settle where as the ultrafines linger in the air for days. A particle that is 0.1 µm in diameter will take over 13 days to settle one meter. which is well after the virus as died.

Thanks. I spent a good deal of time yesterday looking for the article so that I could check their sources, but didn't find it. I'll look again today. I believe it was based on some test of aerodynamics and it had to do with moving bodies, i.e. people passing one another in the supermarket, and what happens with the air that surrounds both persons. The focus of that article was why we are unlikely to contract the virus from quick trips to the store with limited exposure to others.

My somewhat uneducated guess would be that bodies standing still in an environment where the air is not moving but dense with particles would be a higher risk. If I find that article I'll post it here. Thanks!
