The real question should be why (TF) aren't our medical professionals getting the supplies they need? And why (TF) are they reportedly having to buy them from "brokers" charging exorbitant fees? People never cease to disappoint me. (OTOH, people never cease to inspire me, either.)

I would think that common sense tells you what you need to do. Is there a reasonable chance you might encounter another person? Then wear it. Are you going to a deserted place where you will not encounter another person, even in passing? Then maybe not. As has been said repeatedly, the masks we wear are to protect other people from ourselves if we are asymptomatic carriers. That's a matter of personal responsibility and personal responsibility is usually a big deal to a lot of people, so I am not sure why it's suddenly not when it comes to wearing a mask to protect our friends and others in the community. I think people just like to complain.Yes, it does. But, if there'a no other Guy (pants or not), who's just waiting to pee on me; can I walk around naked? Asian countries where masks are common certainly have done much better, on average. While there are other factors involved, I don't think that's a coincidence.

My understanding is that the smallest particles in air never really get to you because of microcurrents in the air as we move that keep those particles from getting close to us. Edit: I'm trying to find the source for this but the gist is that it's aerodynamically difficult for very light particles to actually reach us because of the way air flows around the body, and the farther away we stay from others the less likely it is that our breathing in will breach that aerodynamic cushion.For my day job, I'm an industrial hygienist. They think the virus can be spread by just exhaled breath and the size of the particles is less than 100 nm. A cloth mask won't be effective, nor will a surgical mask. N95 respirators don't fit everyone and they are not completely effective. Some brands are much better than others because they fit better. If you really feel you need to protect yourself going to the grocery store etc., a negative pressure respirator with a HEPA filter will work as long as it fits. Yet it doesn't filter the exhaled air. I think they are recommending cloth masks because it is better than nothing and it does reduce the amount of airborne contamination exposure. But wearing them out on the street in open air seems a little much.
Thanks. I spent a good deal of time yesterday looking for the article so that I could check their sources, but didn't find it. I'll look again today. I believe it was based on some test of aerodynamics and it had to do with moving bodies, i.e. people passing one another in the supermarket, and what happens with the air that surrounds both persons. The focus of that article was why we are unlikely to contract the virus from quick trips to the store with limited exposure to others.Hi LBS bass. I would be interested in seeing your reference on the microenvironment. If we look at a common exposure to welding fumes (which are mostly ultrafines) they are very successful at getting into the workers lungs.
I think all particle sizes contribute to the risk. Remember that people are exposing others who do not even have symptoms so they are not coughing or sneezing. The larger particles from sneezing, coughing, and even possibly talking are actually more likely to settle where as the ultrafines linger in the air for days. A particle that is 0.1 µm in diameter will take over 13 days to settle one meter. which is well after the virus as died.
