What I don't get is the amount of people who think that anything covering your face is automatically N95 equivalent.

I guess they think it's better than nothing...and it is, in a way...
What I don't get is all of the people wearing their latex gloves out of the store and then driving home with the same pair still on.... you dispose of the gloves as soon as get out of the store and then put on a fresh pair before you drive home......
it's called cross-contamination....

I saw a dipstick walking down the street by himself wearing one today. I saw another literally walking down the highway wearing a mask. That mask should be on a doctor in New York, not a dipstick walking down the highway in rural North Carolina.

No disrespect, but you don't know if that person is either a) symptomatic, or b) has an underlying health condition that puts them at risk and so needs to minimize the risk of becoming infected.

Personally, I'm not yet wearing a mask, although I do see some workers at our local grocery store starting to wear them. Normally, our grocery is the social hub for our area, and there have been times in the past when I literally wouldn't have had contact with someone else during the day (other than my wife) unless I went shopping. Now I'm worried for the people who work there at the crossroads of our community. They're people I've gotten to know. I'd show empathy and give them a hug, but under the circumstances.... probably not a good idea.

The real question should be why (TF) aren't our medical professionals getting the supplies they need? And why (TF) are they reportedly having to buy them from "brokers" charging exorbitant fees? People never cease to disappoint me. (OTOH, people never cease to inspire me, either.)

Reasons to wear a mask:
1) 14 day incubation period so there are people sick but don't know it yet.

2) Keeps you from touching your face.

3) Keeps your cough and sneeze more contained.

4) Wear gloves too! Throw them out before getting in your car.

5) Gotta wash up for 20 secs after going out.

6) You can rob more banks...no,no...I keed I keed.

These are the points in the articles I read. Going to use home-made masks, which improve your chances above just washing your hands alone. The big points are it keeps you from touching your face and you might be contagious and not know it. I wish we had adequate testing but I guess that’s just not to be.

I wear a mask when I go into town. I live in a small, rural community and am the only serving EMT for a 1200 square mile area. I can't afford to get sick. The closest town is 30 miles away (for food, fuel or anything else) across the state line and they just reported their first 2 cases. That basically means it is and has been already circulating. I already ended up having to shave a chest length beard to wear the damn thing properly. Now folks look at me like I'm an alien. Better safe than sorry. I've been wearing one on emergency calls also. 90% of people I scrape up off the road in motorcycle wrecks/single vehicle rollovers are folks from big cities who are out having fun passing through our area near Death Valley. Mask good.

One of my careers is as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. I do PRN on that gig these days. When I'm in contact with patients during this covid thing, I wear an N95.

Otherwise, I don't wear a mask.

I find it telling that back in the first Cold War era most people were thinking Civil Defense and large scale coordinated emergency response and recovery efforts on the local, state, and federal level.

Now that we’re in the so-called Information Age, and we’re supposedly so much better informed and sophisticated about these things, the thinking in many quarters seems to be complete denial for as long as possible, followed shortly after by: “Every man for himself.”

I just meant when and where these people were wearing masks. Outside by yourself walking down a highway? There's just no need. It's doing zero. Even if you need a mask where you're going, don't wear it out during your walk.

So far, our hospital system has plenty of PPE. Several local interior decorators and sewing grandmas are cranking out more masks than we can use. We haven't even really tapped into our stockpiles yet because we're getting tone of them from the community.

The facilities I was in Monday, the nurses were all wearing cool decorative masks that were donated by locals. I saw everything from flowers to Wonder Woman symbols. It was great.

I have a painters respirator mask that I have been wearing when I go grocery shopping and when I have to go to work.
It has two VOC cartridges with dust covers over them. I have no idea what the N rating is of the dust covers, but it does give me a tiny bit of peace of mind.
Its also good for spray painting.

It doesn't have to be a surgical mask. My wife sewed some from a light cotton gauze type material (triple thickness).
