I just liked the looks of a couple of them at the website. If I bought one it would probably play one gig, and then sit on a stand for years until I finally decided to sell it.
I do think some of them look really cool. Not a fan of the one in the OP though.

Never understood this either. It seems its not entirely uncommon though..

If you want to adjust the pickup blend you need a screwdriver!
Actually I have a bass with two pickups wired in series to a master volume pot... it does have a Varitone though...
Two pickups and a volume knob isn't such a bad idea, assuming of course that the bridge pickup isn't connected to the output.
The thing I never understood about this one, is that if you are going to put the sound guy in charge of you tone, why have a volume knob at all? Just have a totally blank bass and print up little cards for the sound guy that say "Use your best judgement!"

Jens does some really cool stuff but this sure isn't one of them! I can see it now. You are thumping away and ready to go into a solo and you flip that bass up in front of you and tweak up that tone trying to twiddle those knobs blind and reversed. Real handy. I think walking over to the knobs on the amp would be more convenient. But obviously the looks of a no-knobs bass are stellar.
That's why I love the looks of what is it? Rob Allen? Where the wood knobs are built into the wooden bridge to give you "the look".
I believe it is to anchor your pinky to make playing by the bridge easier, also it helps counteract the neckdive I'd imagine.
